For my mother, the hymn of those standing on the slope.

As though a first night toward the wisdom of the wound.

As though a perfumed gust bestows its breath—

fans of perfume blowing over a waft.

As though a green glimpse from the radiance of splendor

draws its spirit to itself, free in its gaze.

As though a white gift, a hand going forth,

and coming from her—a hand lavish in giving.

As though a painting, and the unseen gave wings to its clouds—

a sky, as though my heart within it were a lone tablet.

For my mother, the earth’s eyes let fall the mantle

as a call; then the grass said to the water: What is my confession?

And the earth, hidden in blood, said to me:

Was it from an embrace of the mother that I came toward the edifice,

or is weeping mine, as I tend its distance here,

when there, now, it hastens upon a spear,

or does sublime pain speak, ascribing

the agonies to my remaining life with a searing blast?

For my mother, what I have not yet said—a vision that fell asleep.

And I have not yet said it—and life is shorter than praise,

and shorter than your sacred vision, which saw

through my eyes a wound that had opened from a wound.

Then she said, as she folded her wing over me,

    as though I had not grown: Gently, gently, like the dawn;

so no sorrow to scatter upon yourself, and no weeping.

I saw you as the embers of struck fire bent tenderly over you.

I saw you draw near to yourself, until, when it complained

to its life—a heart—I saw you on the slope.

We stood upon our names in a truth,

so nothing concerned us but standing upon solace.

So, my son, do not weep; take my hand for a moment,

and say to me, 'O my mother,' so I may be the word of wafting fragrance.

For my mother, I said only: Is it a kiss

to your lofty hand, so I may read what my tablet is?
