    If you walk wherever

    the shadow is stretched out, and when you walk,

    وكنتَ أصختَ السَّمعَ

    your shirt is torn;

    and you had listened intently,

    الخطوَ، والخطوَ مردودُ؛

    you see no echo, and you had made

    your step kneel, and the step is turned back;

    ومفقوده مدًى يسيلُ هوى

    And between what is observed

    and its lost part, an expanse flows with passion;

    وما بين معدودٍ

    its observed part is then lost;

    And between what is counted

    لفَّكَ، الآنَ، مخضودُ؛

    and its severed part lies futility, as though a mirage

    that wrapped you is now broken;

    And you—while no bridge

    over the river is alone with a bridge—

    ولا الموجُ يخلي ذمَّة الماء

    seem to walk, though the river does not exist;

    nor does the wave absolve the water of its obligation,

    حيثُ أخدودُ؛

    rising, embracing rising air

    where there is a ravine;

    and the towers have been worn away by it

    when they appear, and the wind has a ladder of ascent,

    تدلَّى كأنَّ الكرمَ آخذُه

    and around you is a cluster;

    it hung down as though the grapevine were taking it

    والسُّكرُ مشهودُ؛

    toward the intoxicating heat of the earth's lips,

    and the drunkenness is witnessed;

    It withdrew; nothing is in the cloud

    but its sky; and it had revealed itself before,

    so the cloud is a supple shoot.

    And it had savored its cup,

    أوْ إذا القولُ معمودُ؛

    which grew drunk on what she—the earth—said,

    or when speech is propped up;

    And it had adorned itself. The sun's hand—

    its rays never go slack unless

    فماذا على الأرض القديمة

    something is knotted to the hand;

    So what, upon the ancient earth,

    begins, while before you something is unbound

    upon it, then severed?

    If you walk and are startled by a cry

    upon the earth, slow your step:

    وفضَّ نداءً آتيا

    upon the earth is a newborn;

    and unseal an approaching call

    filling a forest,

    perhaps a second labor

    تلفَّتَ مذعورا إلى أمِّه

    whose secret is return;

    he turned, terrified, toward his mother

    فالحبلُ مشدودُ؛

    there, and the trees yearned for him,

    so the cord is taut;

    As though it were you,

    whenever you turn suddenly

    والقلبُ مفئودُ؛

    toward your umbilical cord,

    and the heart is stricken;

    So do not walk

    unless the earth is

    ولا تمش إلا فيكَ؛

    a robe,

    and do not walk except within yourself;

    indeed, you are stretched out.
