Do not return wherever we made the mirage kneel,

and withdrew, chewing the ruin within us.

We have grown old in humiliation and abasement,

and frequented the dwellings in estrangement.

The ruins disowned us when we drew near,

so they turned their flank away from our coming.

They disowned us while we were without horses,

riding the taint of submission as our mounts.

They disowned us, and the hearthstones have a tale

of tales we never drew near to.

    سوف تجثو مَخافةً وطلابا

    Do not return. These steps of ours are weariness;

they will kneel in fear and entreaty.

Soon they will scoop up dust,

and when they scoop it, they will deem the dust too little.

The stride of greatness has forgotten our hills,

and our hills wait, short of greatness.

We were a land above the lands,

when we marched toward the clouds as clouds ourselves:

Pour down wherever you wish; surely tribute

    is coming, kissing the thresholds.

    لم تعدْ، مثلكَ المَطايا، انتسابا

    Do not return. The mounts departed with a people;

the mounts, like you, have not returned as kin.

They folded away the deserts, laden with glory,

swift-moving, trotting across those wide expanses.

They folded away a lifetime, fearful for us

because of our myths, shutting a door.

We raced one another toward ruin with relief,

and stole a hide from idleness.

    كَمْ تراشقنا بالسيوف غيابا

    And brandished a sword, yet never stripped ourselves for battle;

how often we hurled swords at one another in absentia!

Do not return. These swords are tales

in shops, with no thought of warfare.

You see them as remnants of remnants,

hung on the wall: they failed, and so did it.

You will see them dangling for a dance,

and the front teeth sway, enraptured by them.

You will see the new knight appear,

bare the sword with song and melt away.

You will see the Arab nation jubilant

at conquests in song, reckoned to its credit.

Do not return. We are drunk on victory

after victory, and invigorated by drink.

Everything of ours collapsed in a sea,

so we rallied to cleave the surging waves.

    Everything—we possessed its reach,

and its echo, and whatever looms upright.

    إنْ سألنا فإنَّ دهرا أجابا

    Forever our fervor rises higher;

if we ask, an age replies.

Whenever we asked, a sword smiled—

once ours, now estrangement within us.

Do not return. Whenever reproach follows reproach,

one grows accustomed to reproach in words.

There is no speech—how can we offer an apology

for an affliction, when the calamity is so grievous?

We no longer know Arabness except

as rhymes, through which to cry for a refuge.

Yet the rhymes have tired of a call

that silence shrouded in delusion and desolation,

to a wasteland, when it takes on Arab identity:

What ails my people, that they have joined you as necks?

Do not return. Battle has turned gray with erasure,

and craned its neck toward its double, a mirage.

Return to us if you wish, but beware:

they may bolt door after door.

Then beware: they will take your lofty name

as a medal, to grow drunk on titles.

How can you speak, O son of al-Walid,

after you returned and regained your expectancy?

"How can I return, when my sword is my cloak?

This is a nation... I shall fold away the answer."
