Someone or other walks before you

In the winter quarters, he does not walk

Except after you, until he no longer sees you.

He hides his hand in your hands,

And reads the palm's tattoo a little.

If he finds something whose meaning is your night journey,

He stretches out in your eyes as visions,

So you may ask: how can there be indwelling in me?

Rather, who journeyed by night within your eyes as an indwelling?

He becomes one, even if a language

    Erases a language—an utterance: O earth,

The sea, on two sides, veering toward you.

And the sea is the trade of whoever follows

Foam—the unseen has its dwellings—he darns

Foam, as though in the valley of mystery there were horses.

And the sea, in its lightness, is whales

They float, then flutter; they had flown,

    And as though they slumber, and as though a pirate said to him;

What did the pirate say? He handed him

A night-blind lantern, if he did hand him one?

But the sea kept its counsel, then spoke, questioning him:

Who is walking near you before me,

While the whales are boats that veer with me?

Who had carried you, while the flood was a wall,

Who raised the shadow's wave here

And went abroad, carrying sand he shaped into a moon

That splits and mends, while the vision outruns every warning?

Someone in your clothes makes ready,

And the night clothes a day in its cloak at times,

And a day, at times, heals the night's wound shortly after a fight.

Someone or no one—the two may meet

Briefly, and part a little farther from you,

And race one another toward you, while you, there, do not see yourself...
