O crosser of the night, tell me how you cross it.

The letter is a sword—so how do you unveil it?

You grew strange, differing in how you articulate it.

The name is no outline you approach and bring into presence.

Nor has a mark reached you—you will drag it

from the place to something you assess.

Had you traveled, visible, without a body?

Light is a book, and no line depicts it.

The palm is a cave; so do not ask with every hand

about passage in a night you do not cross.

Bring your possibility, captive, without a lip.

Bring your draping, a seer; I shall behold it.

Bring your departure, exiled into my language.

And the deserts gnaw my stride from me; I remember it.

I denied your speech, so I would not see you in it

except as the panting of a turning glance I almost denied.

I denied your night, water with no movement in it,

nor any release, save through folding that plumbs it.

You fold a book toward your right hand, carrying it

as a cup—so does your right hand squeeze its intuition?

You surmised that I trot through the night, immersing myself

in what is yours—nor does my meaning engulf it.

You swept for me a fierce dusk that knows me

and clothes itself in me, as though I knew the secret.

You sat between me and me, where you break me,

until I become myself, whom nothing breaks.

You whispered to the supple maidens, bending me:

Did I not ask you how the supple maidens bend him?

You grew restive when the manifestations did not reveal me

except to myself: was the night revealing him?

Nothing breaks a pledge because of its beauty.

The manifestation was under a pledge it does not break.

Nothing—and the night appears in its height,

as though the river races when it outstrips it.

What did you spark? Is it a universe through whose metaphor

the stranger wandered, as though the night bewitched him?

What did you wound? A metaphor at the ready:

a bow that stretched toward an arrow it readies.

O crosser of the night—my heart, glancing about,

My heart is me; so answer me: how do you cross it?
