My two friends, when winter comes

with a long night and a short day,

and sorrow, worry, cold, and clouds,

and lightning and thunder within it, and rain,

and the breaking of branches and the birds' lament,

and the freezing of a river and the withering of blossoms,

    ولا القلب يبكي ولا ينفطر

    then do not complain to me of time's vicissitudes;

nor let the heart weep or break,

nor let the soul curse this existence,

nor let the voice rise in cursing fate.

Nor mention to me the difficulty of lessons,

and the long nights and the long hours of wakefulness,

and distress at this city's institute,

and fear of punishment and much caution.

But will you not recall for me a summer

whose memory makes one forget this age,

and a countryside there that gazes toward us,

and a cherished house that waits there?

There on the meadow, how often we sang,

and how often we danced in the trees' shade,

and how often we drank from a spring of water,

and how often we plucked delicious fruit.

And between the hills and below the plateaus,

we hunt the gazelle and follow the trail,

    وما الصيد غير الهوى الخفر

    only to return, as always, with Hunayn's two slippers—empty-handed;

and the hunt is nothing but bashful love.

And a beautiful sea—and more beautiful than it

are the maidens of the meadows, for they are pearls.

There on the sand, how often they sat,

    the fragrant breeze caressing them.

Then it passes on, grown more and more fragrant,

    adding victims—and where is escape?

My two friends, how sweet to us is this longing

for the day of return and forsaking city life.

And the song grew long as the longing grew long,

so outlines vanished and images appeared.

Thus, O my two friends, we recall nights

    to forget the nights that go on;

and we recall a summer, love, and goodness

to forget winter, discontent, and evil.
