How long, O heart, in pursuit of the fair,

will you strike palm against palm in your longing?

How often longing has frightened you, and how often you have come to me

complaining of wounds from one with blade-sharp eyelids.

Love is in earnest, O heart; so drink for its sake

a cup of death, with no trace of jest.

Who will bear the complaint of one weakened by love

against the languid-eyed one, fully armed?

    O you whose slender waist

resembles its own phantom glimpsed in a dream:

the weight of your haunches has sapped its strength,

so it began to complain of its weakness to the sash.

May the lover’s soul ransom you! Be gentle, for you have

corrupted one who was virtue’s ally.

How often I spent the night in anguish over the day of parting,

exchanging laments with the winged one,

until the star faded and the darkness vanished,

and my eye kissed the face of morning.

O night traveler, spreading the fragrance of slumber

over the hills as you cross the plains,

if you glimpse that lightning from their camp,

or your nose scents the fragrance of the winds,

then bow humbly and pass through their camp, seeking

a tormented heart that has come to rest among the passes.

    يحسبه الرائون نشوان راح

    Longing intoxicated it, leaving it cast aside;

onlookers think it drunk on wine.

It trembles at a swaying figure, yet

the brandishing of spears in battle does not frighten it.

It spent the night captive to longing, ransomed by no

redeemer; nor did the fair show it mercy.

    ولو قضى نحبا به لاستراح

    Longing flings it with the palm of heartache;

and if it died from this, it would find rest.
