He smiled like lightning when it flashed—
He smiled like lightning when he came into view
a fawn who beguiled the heart until it was ensnared.
Sprinkling the heart with joy until it clung

He appeared before us, letting his hair fall loose,
And there appeared to us a messenger whose hair
and he was radiance, and he was dusk.
Was radiance itself, and it was dusk

As though the gleam of his light were a sharp sword,
As if his brilliant teeth were unsheathed swords
the morning was struck by it and split apart.
That pierced the morning, splitting it open
فماso never حاكَwove منfrom شعرهhis hair مطرفاًa mantle

He wove no mantle from his hair,
So whatever poetry he wove, O Motrif
of night, without a rent appearing in it.
Pierced the night, making holes within it

He appeared, while the Pleiades on the sky's horizon
He appeared, and Pleiades on the sky's horizon
were like a cluster of fruit upon a platter.
Seemed a cluster of fruit on a plate

His face put the sky's full moon to shame,
So he shamed the full moon, dimming its face
so this dew is that sweat seeping forth.
While the rising moon's spittle dripped its sweat

فهاso behold هوhe فيon الافقthe horizon ِ رهنcaptive to القلقrestlessness

And Suhayl grew mad with longing for his cheeks;
Suhail ducked into its lair, hesitant
there he is on the horizon, captive to unrest.
There it lurked on the horizon, anxious, wary

The girdle presses cruelly upon his waist,
The belt constricted his waist
so there he is, his girdled waist trembling.
And now it stammers, no longer eloquent

On his cheeks is a rose, its bloom resplendent,
His cheeks, the roses their brilliance imbue
for hearts have watered it with blood.
For hearts enflamed have watered them anew

He stationed his beauty spot there as a guard,
His mole stands guard over him
warding the eyes' spell away from the blossoms.
Protecting his bloom from eyes that peek

So protect it with your breasts; suppose that it
So hide his bud with your breasts—give him
has endured your cheeks' fire until it burned.
The fire of your cheeks has set him ablaze

For the water of youth has surged in them;
The waters of youth rage within them
do you not fear that drowning may overtake it?
Do you not fear he may drown in their waves?

فباتso he became يُرىis seen فيهin him مثلsomething like النَزقْrecklessness
A fawn whose nature was steeped in drunkenness,
The wine has stirred his temperament
so something like recklessness could be seen in him.
And so he seems like a dripping drunk

His front teeth and the waw-shaped curl at his temple—
His softness, the curve of his cheeks
those two taught me grammatical coordination.
Have taught me the bend of a branch

So I passed the night, my wine drawn from his saliva,
And I have spent the night, drunk on his saliva
and did not sip a dissolute cupbearer's cup.
Without a cup, exhausted from his lips
ولمand did not اسأمtire of ِ الراحwine لكنّنيbut I

Nor had I tired of wine, but I
I do not tire of the gentle breeze
forsook the delicate for the more delicate still.
But I have left the tender for the harsh

May that spot in Karkh, a playground, be watered
He quenched Karakh's land with a downpour
by a cloud of steady showers, sustaining abundant rain,
From thick clouds, ceaseless in their drizzle

pouring forth, its pouring imitating
Its pouring mimics the spill
the buckets of waterwheels whenever it gushes.
Of waterfalls as they burst and surge forth

For I have there—may my reproachers never know—
And so I have no patience for blame
a maiden who shines with the radiance of daybreak,
A maid shining with the dawn's first light

Yet she brought me nothing but
delightful kisses and embraces.
The tantalizing kiss and embrace

And we were two nurslings of love's milk;
We were infants nursing at passion’s teat
all that was pleasing and tender in it was ours.
Savoring all the juice of its fruits

And when reason's truth came with gray hair,
But when the truth of old age came
and youth was a falsehood that had vanished,
Youth was nullified, destroyed

she turned her neck away, while love stayed fast,
Her neck bent and passion still unwaning
and that endures as long as life's last breath.
It persists with the tenacity of a final breath

And when the dawn of gray hair had gathered around me,
And when white hair surrounded me
she recited: 'Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak.'
I said, I seek refuge in the Lord of the Dawn
