Have wreaths of hair ever been twined

Upon anything but crescents and full moons?

And have veils of anemones ever lifted

Over cheeks of fire and light?

    والحاظ فترنَ عن الفتورِ

    Cheeks made rosy by beauty,

    And glances that have tired of languor;

And bodies that almost melt with delicacy,

    With livers hewn from rock.

And tame ones among the camp's gazelles go bounding,

    Sociable in gatherings, never skittish.

Places of play and revelry display their beauty,

    With silvery smiles and throats.

I cannot tell: is it mouths from necklaces

You distinguish, or necklaces from mouths?

Their supple forms are boughs in the dwelling-grounds,

And their faces are moons of secluded chambers.

They were endowed with a brisk gait amid curved dunes of sand,

That almost slip through the folds of their waists.

And they perfumed the sanctuary with musk's fragrance,

Setting its little caskets above their breasts.

Their sipping lips and heedless eyes

Show you beauty in curves and cruelty.

And on their cheeks are gardens of beauty,

    And moons—thus blossoms and light.

So we knew no barrenness in any dwelling,

Nor found a moonless ending in any month.

And a slender-waisted woman sways in pride,

Like a bān shoot in a branch-bender's hands.

When she comes forth, she trails a night of hair,

So she emerges in veils from behind the veils.

And were she to unveil, her radiance would cloak her,

So her unveiling would veil her from view.

Though love is true, a jealous lover's gaze.

And holds me fast over droplets of wine,

A heady wine from which the grape-presser is freed,

    Renewing cheerfulness and joy.

We shone in its radiance and were illumined,

So we cannot tell evening from early morning.

Indeed, it flashed in my spring abode, making

Mount Sinai and my own mount alike.

If you look upon the limpid water, she says:

"So lower your gaze: you are of Numayr."
