O driver of white camels, will you let the mounts rest
Does the driver give respite to the riders
Where stand the two abodes of Umayma and Rabab?
Where my quarter Umm Umaimah and Rabab
فلتلكfor those indeed الرسومthe traces تحكيresemble خطوطاًlines
ولتلكand those indeed الديارthe dwellings تحكيresemble الكِتاباwriting
For those traces indeed resemble lines,
So those features tell lines
And those dwellings resemble writing.
And those homes tell the book
علَّناperhaps we انthat نبِلٌmay moisten حَرٌthe heat of غليلburning longing

Perhaps we may cool the heat of longing,
We hope that we are noble, free, sick
Grown more searing and aflame through separation.
The separation increased burning and inflammation

Where my tears in the morning are like rain,
Where my tears go like a train
And at evening my eyelids resemble clouds.
And my eyelids go and tell the clouds

I ask, and my flowing tears are the answerer;
Asking and the answering tear asks me
Have you ever seen—alas for you!—a questioner answer?
Do you see the asker has answered

اذwhen رأىhe saw الدمعthe tears ليسdo not يفنىcome to an end إنصِباباin pouring
Who will defend me against the reproacher before dawn,
Who excuses me for being fascinated
When he saw the tears pouring without end?
When he saw the tear does not stop flowing
كيفَhow أصغيI listen لِعاذلٍto a reproacher لَستُI do not أدريknow

How can I heed a reproacher, when I do not know
How can I listen to a blamer I do not know
Whether he spoke of love wrongly or rightly?
He said wrongfully in love or right

He hopes for no beloved's nearness through that;
He does not hope to get close to the beloved with that
How can you hope the beloved will draw near?
How can you hope for the beloved to get close

His glance stole my heart when it shot at me
He robbed the heart of its edge when he hit me
A well-aimed arrow of love—and it struck home.
With an arrow of love aimed so it struck

Do not, you two, blame it as a thief; rather blame
Do not blame him for robbing and blame
My ribs, since they enabled it to steal.

The heart was indeed struck by love when
The heart was struck with love when
I feared that my eye, as it gazed, might be struck.
My eye feared that it would be hit

Where are those domed tents in the land of Najd?
Where are those domes from the land of Najd
Do you think separation has dismantled those tents?
Do you see the separation settled those domes
لكfor you فيin الحيّthe encampment نظرةa glimpse لمهاتٍof female oryx, figuratively beauties
راهبthe monk of الديرthe monastery لوif رآهاhe saw her تصابىhe would act like a young lover
In the camp, a glimpse of oryx-like beauties is yours;
You have a look at lively mothers
If the monastery's monk saw her, he would act like a young lover.
If a monk saw her, he would shiver
لوif رأىit saw الغصنthe branch قدَّهاher figure ماnot تثنٌىit would sway
حينwhen تهتزّshe sways نشوةin rapture وشباباand in youth
If the branch saw her figure, it would not sway
If the branch saw her swaying with delight and youth
When she sways in rapture and youth.
It would not bend when she sways with euphoria and youth
