Be gentle—do not fear hurt or harm from me.

For I have neither a fang nor a claw.

Be gentle; let not your wings flutter in fear,

Nor let your eyes assail me with a hostile sidelong glance.

Why fear, when within my breast, O bird, for humankind

And birds lies a world of visions of love and poetry?

Did this burden frighten you, beneath which bends

My back, which my patience never ceases to sustain,

And a tread that would stir up the earth, but for moisture

Scattered over the lifeless soil by the rain's tears,

And a surge of breaths whose exhalation almost

Makes my lungs stream apart in its scorching blasts?

So you gathered in your wing-tips, poised to spring,

And held back from pecking for fear of calamities.

And you said, going too far: 'An aggressor among humankind,

A man of snares, folding his ribs around deceit.'

Be gentle: some suspicion is sin; I am no more,

In humankind's world, than a stranger among travelers.

Be gentle: I am not a man who seeks his ease

Through another creature's suffering, despite my hardship.

Ask the star's pulsations in the deep sea of darkness,

And the revelry of the predawn hours as dawn awakens.

Ask the fragrance of those blossoms on the hills,

And the murmuring of the willows on the riverbank.

    يُطلُّ عليه السفحُ بالحُلَل النُّضْر

    Ask the valley, drunk with fragrance and dew;

The hillside overlooks it, clad in verdant robes.

Ask them: from my heart, on every breath of fragrance

Within them lies a trace that tells my hidden secret.

Ask life about my songs, for there still lingers

In its hearing an echo of pristine melody.

Even if time's cruelty has hushed them for a while,

There is surely in the soul a melody beyond time's cruelty.

For the captive bird may fall silent, though it is filled

With longing that stirs the soul toward the free horizon.

I wished I were your neighbor all my life,

Shielding you with my very self from treachery's onslaught.

My evenings glow, enchanted by your fragrance,

And your whispers intoxicate me in the green mornings.

And your shadow playfully assails me in the field,

So I leap over the thorns, running in its wake.

And I rest in bliss beneath the nest, in a bed's embrace,

Over which dew flows from the cups of flowers.

There my bedding is grass, tender and laid smooth,

Soft, and yet the pillow is of stone.

And over me lies a thin robe of oleander leaves,

Shielding my naked body from the harm of cold and heat.

Wishes from imagination's wondrous visions, woven by

A deft artisan of winged illusion within my breast.

I dreamed of them awhile, while calamity dozed,

Then, when it awoke, my visions dried up in terror.

And I was enamored of their memory, though between us lay

Deep darkness from the night of reality and thought.

You restored their phantom to the shattered heart,

Anew, and magic once more coursed through its blood.

And you made it forget the pains of a world brought down by

Tempests scattering death over land and sea.

Destruction ran rampant in its dwellings, and withered were

Its charms—despite reason—by the lust for evil.

So let my closed eyelids embrace them

A little while, and let my lips touch the phantom.

And do not spoil with doubt the rapture of our dream,

For it is only a little while, and then—we do not know!
