أغارت علينا باللِّحاظِ عيونُ

لها الحسنُ من خَلفِ النِّقابِ كمينُ

The eyes beneath the veils lie in ambush for us,

Eyes raided us with glances, beauty holding an ambush behind the veil.

With beauty concealed behind the veil's disguise.

And they drew against us from the sheaths of their eyelids; likewise, the names of scabbards are eyelids.

وسَلَّت علينا من غُمُودِ جُفونِها

كذلك أسماءُ الغُمودِ جُفونُ

From beneath their languid lids they glance down at us,

Lend the composition of my verse a discerning eye, for within its folds, alchemy lies hidden.

Thus do eyes glance from beneath their lids.

For your palm has shared in it with us, as it came to aid us upon it at the time of giving.

أَعِر نظمَ شعري منك عيناً بصيرةً

ففي طَيِّهِ للكيمياءِ كُمُونُ

Lend an attentive eye to the rhythm of my verse,

You bestow bounty upon us, then return it to yourself as precious pearls of praise.

For in its folds alchemy lies hidden.

فقد شاركَتنا فيه كفُّك إِذ غَدت

عليه لنا عند العطاءِ تُعينُ

Your hand has aided it, for when giving

It becomes for us a helping hand.

تجودُ لنا بالبرِّ ثُمَّ تَرُدُّهُ

لها وهوَ دُرٌّ بالمديح ثَمينُ

You bestow kindness, then reclaim it

As precious praise belonging to you.
