So cease boasting of the past, for how many have vanished—
Leave off boasting of the past, for how much has passed away,
So leave off boasting of the past, for often has faded
crumbling palaces among these hills!
In these residences a ruined palace,
Upon these hills, a palace long decayed.

Kisra’s vaulted hall today, in its ruined state—
Khosrow's palace today in its destruction,
The Arch of Chosroes, today in its ruin,
by your life, an inhabited reed hut is better than it.
Is better for you than a new, flourishing hovel.
Is outmatched, by your life, by an inhabited hut.
