كمhow often كنتُI used to أسمعُhear أنthat الدهرَtime ذوpossessed of غِيَرٍreversals
فاليومَso today بالخُبرِthrough experience أَستغنيI have no need عنof الخَبَرِreports
How often I used to hear that time is full of reversals.
How often have I heard that fate is fickle,
So today, through experience, I have no need of reports.
Yet today I've learned to dispense with hearsay.
تشابَهَresemble one another الناسُpeople فيin خَلقٍoutward form وفيand in خُلُقٍcharacter
تشابُهَlike the resemblance الناسِof people والأصنامِand idols فيin الصُّورِoutward shapes
People resemble one another in form and character,
People are alike in form and character;
as people and idols resemble one another in outward shape.
People and idols are alike in shape.
ولمand did not أبِتspend the night قَطُّever منconcerning خَلقٍany person علىin ثقةٍtrust
إِلاَّexcept وأصبحتُand I awoke منconcerning عقليmy judgment علىin غَرَرِuncertainty
And never have I spent a night trusting anyone,
Never have I trusted any creature
without waking in doubt of my own judgment.
Without finding myself deluded.
لاdo not تخدَعَنِّىdeceive me بمرئىٍّwith something seen ومُستَمعٍand something heard
فماfor I do not أُصَدِّقُtrust لاneither سمعىmy hearing ولاnor بَصريmy sight
Do not deceive me with sights and sounds,
Do not deceive me with what I see or hear,
for I trust neither my hearing nor my sight.
For I give no credence to my eyes or ears.
وكيفand how آمَنُcan I trust غيرِيanyone other than myself عندat the time of نائبةٍa calamity
يوماًfor a day إِذاwhen كنتُI am منagainst نفسىmyself علىon حَذَرِguard
And how can I trust anyone else in a calamity
How can I trust others in time of peril
even for a day, when I am on my guard against myself?
When I cannot trust myself?

Noble virtues and my firmly established glory forbid me
Glory and greatness disdain me;
to remain while my hopes are on a journey.
My hopes are set on traveling far away.

Indeed, among the eloquent I am more renowned than
I outshine eloquent men as the sun;
the sun, and range more widely across the horizons than the moon.
I traverse the horizons like the moon.
وسوفَand shall أرمىI cast بنفسىmy own self كُلَّevery مَهلُكَةٍdeadly place

And I shall cast myself into every deadly place,
And I will hurl myself into every danger
through which shooting stars, if they travel, pass by night in peril.
As shooting stars speed through the darkness,

Either the heights of glory, the ultimate goal of my hope,
Either to exaltation, which is my hope,
or death, the ultimate destination of humankind.
Or to death, which is man's common fate.
