O our beloved ones, why is it that whenever I recall you—

though I never forget—a ghoul carries off my patience?

And if my eye spies al-Sham’s lightning, while

darkness’s skirts draw back, though I am far from it,

my heart is caught before it flies away in longing

by fingers slender as a reed-pen’s shaft.

And it seemed to me that swords in its sky

had been drawn, and that I lay slain among them.

Even if the dwellings lie empty of us and you,

and their dwelling places have become ruins,

yet in the house of Munqidh we have a consoling example,

beside which calamity grows light, though grave.

Their homelands proved inhospitable to them, so they departed,

and in that departure, glory too departed.

Lands where their might and bounty offer

rugged ground and level plains to those who visit.

And time, through their right hands and faces,

bears unfading blazes and white stockings there.

The land lies empty; in their absence, lush spring is barren

there, and the radiant morning is late afternoon.

And they journeyed on despite their foes; their guide

was the fair praise of them in East and West.

And before they departed, I did not know

that firmly rooted mountains could move away.

They humbled time’s calamities by force; thus between them

and misfortunes lie age-old blood feuds.
