ياO أيُّهاO you الملكُthe king الذيwhose أوصافُهُhis qualities
غُرَرٌwhite forehead blazes تجلَّتshone forth للزّمانto Time الأسفَعِdark-faced
O noble company, whose qualities are
O king, whose qualities
bright brow-blazes, revealed to the dark-visaged age!
Are white forehead blazes revealed to dark-faced Time,
لاdo not تُطمِعِembolden الشعراءَthe poets فىَّagainst me فإنّنىfor I
لوif شِئتُI wished لمnot أجبُنI cower ولمand not أتخشَّعِI humble myself
Do not embolden the poets against me—for I,
Do not embolden the poets against me, for I,
if I chose, would neither lose my nerve nor bow.
If I wished, would neither cower nor humble myself.
إنif لمnot أكنI am مِلءَthe fullness of العيونِthe eyes فإنّنىthen I
فىin القولspeech ياO ابنَson of الصّيدِthe noble lords ملءُthe fullness of المَسمَعthe ear
Though I may not be one who fills the eyes, I am,
If I do not fill the eyes, then I,
in speech, O son of noble chiefs, one who fills the ear.
In speech, O son of noble lords, fill the ear.
فليُمسِكواso let them refrain عنِّيfrom me فلولاfor were it not أنّنيthat I
أبقىI preserve علىupon عِرضيmy honor إذاًthen لمnot أجزَعِI am dismayed
So let them leave me be: were it not that I
So let them leave me alone; for were it not that I
guard my honor, I would show no alarm.
Preserve my honor, I would not be dismayed.
وأهمُّand more important منthan هجوىmy satire لهمagainst them مدحُpraise of الذىthe one who
رفَعraised القريضَpoetry إِلىto المحلِّthe station الأرفَعِloftiest
More important than my lampooning them is praise of him
And more important than my satire of them is praise of the one
who raised poetry to the loftiest station.
Who raised poetry to the loftiest station.
ولوand even if أنهthat it ناجَىwhispered to ضميرَيmy conscience فيin الكرىsleep

طيفُa phantom الخيالِthe imagination بِريبَةٍwith a misgiving لمnot أهجَعِI slumber
And his is this: in sleep there whispered to my conscience
And even if my conscience were whispered to in sleep
a phantom of fancy; beset by doubt, I could not rest.
By a phantom of fancy with a misgiving, I would not slumber.
وإِذاand when بداappears لِيto me الهُجرُfoul speech لمnot أرَI see شخصَهُits form
وإذاand when يُقالis spoken لِيَto me الخَناobscenity لمnot أسمَعِI hear
When obscenity showed itself, I never looked upon its face;
And when foul speech appears before me, I do not see its form;
and when foul speech was uttered to me, I did not listen.
And when obscenity is spoken to me, I do not hear.
والنّاسُand people قدalready علمواthey have known بأنّىthat I ليسis not لىfor me
مُذsince then فىin أعراضهمtheir honor منany مَطمَعِdesire
People have long known that I have had,
And people have known that I have not,
from of old, no designs upon their honor.
Since then, had any designs upon their honor.
