وقدand indeed أنكرواthey denied قتليmy being slain بسيفِby the sword of لِحاظِهِhis glances
وقد أنكروا قتلي بسيفِ لِحاظِهِ
ولوand had أنصفونيthey treated me fairly ماnot استطاعُواthey could لهof it جَحدَاdenial
ولو أنصفوني ما استطاعُوا له جَحدَا
And they have denied my being slain by the sword of his glances;
They denied that my sword, with its sharp blade, had killed him,
And had they treated me fairly, they could not have denied it.
Though they could not honestly deny it if they were just.
وقالواand they said دَعِabandon الدَّعوىthe claim فماfor no صحَّproved valid شاهدٌwitness
وقالوا دَعِ الدَّعوى فما صحَّ شاهدٌ

عليها ولسنا نقبلُ الكفَّ والخدَّا
And they said, “Drop the claim, for no witness has proved valid
They said, "Stop your claim - no witness confirms it,
In its support, and we accept neither the palm nor the cheek.
And we do not accept a palm or cheek as proof."

And if there were truth in what you say and allege
If what you say and claim were true,
Against his two eyes, their narcissus would have turned to roses.”
The narcissi on his cheeks would have returned crimson with blood.

دَمَ القِرنِ يوماً عُدَّ أمضَى الظُّبا حَدَّا
Yet they did not know that the sword, by shedding
They did not know that my sword, by shedding his blood,
An adversary’s blood one day, was deemed the sharpest-edged of blades.
One day counted the horned oryx among the extinct animals.
