Messenger of love, convey my greeting to Salma.
Messenger of love, convey my greetings to Selma,
Messenger of passion, convey my greetings to Salma,
And share the heady wine of her smiling, dark-lipped mouth.
And be gentle with her smiling, tender mouth.
And partake of the wine from her smiling, deep-red lips,
وناجand commune with هواهاher love، علّperhaps فيin الغيبthe unseen رحمةmercy
تَدارَكُrescues هذاthis القلبheart أنlest ينقضيit perish همّاof grief
And commune with her love; perhaps, in the unseen, mercy
Confide in her love, hoping that mercy
And whisper to her love, that perhaps in the unseen lies a mercy
Will save this heart before it perishes of grief.
Will save this heart from endless worries.
To rescue this heart before it perishes from sorrow.

And pour out the lament of one yearning, enslaved by love,
And pour out the longing of an enamored one,
And pour out the complaint of a yearning, captive soul,
Whose burning liver constricts within him in anguish.
Whose burning liver is squeezed with sorrow.
Possessing a burning core that constricts with overwhelming grief.
فكمfor how many تحتbeneath هذاthis القلبheart منof لاعجsearing pang الهوىlove
وكمand how many بينwithin هذاthis الجسمbody منof أضلعribs كلمىwounded
For how many searing pangs of love lie beneath this heart,
So much passion aches under this heart,
For how much searing passion lies beneath this heart,
And how many wounded ribs lie within this body!
And so many ribs lie between this body and despair.
And within this body, how many ribs are wounded.

I spend the night communing with a star, as though
I stay up at night, speaking to a star, as if
I spend the night whispering to the stars, as though
My heart's beloved had become hidden there.
My beloved has become hidden in the darkness.
The beloved of my heart has become hidden there.

My homeland, my homeland—how sweet love is, and how
My country, my country, how sweet is love, and how
My land, my land, how sweet is passion, and yet how
Bitter are the cups of love mixed with poison!
Bitter are the cups of love mixed with poison.
Bitter are the cups of love when mingled with poison.
بلاديmy homeland ألاwill you not عطفٌtenderness عليّtoward me بنظرةwith a glance
حنانينكyour mercy, I beg، ماnot هذاthis السلوّforgetfulness، ولاnor إثماsin
My homeland, will you not show me tenderness with a glance?
My country, if only you would show me some kindness,
My land, will you not turn to me with a glance of kindness?
I beg your mercy—this is neither forgetfulness nor sin.
Your tenderness - what is this harshness, this blame?
I beg your tenderness; what is this detachment? It is neither solace nor sin.
ومذand since فتحتopened عينيmy eye المدامعُtears أبصرَتit beheld

And since tears opened my eye, it has beheld
Since I opened my teary eyes, I have seen
And since the tears forced open my eyes, they have beheld
Your love; no shame rests upon me, nor any blame.
Only your love, so I have no shame or guilt.
Your love alone; thus upon me lies no shame nor blame.
فللهso, by God ماwhat حمّلتنيyou made me bear منof صبابةardent longing
ولوand if ذاكthat فيin "رضوىRadwa" لهدّمهit would surely demolish it هدماutterly
So, by God, what longing you have made me bear!
By God, what youthful vigor you have burdened me with -
By God, what a burden of longing you have placed upon me—
And were that in Radwa, it would utterly demolish it.
If it were in Rizwa, it would demolish it completely.
Had it been placed upon Mount Radwa, it would have razed it to the ground.
