اِنتَظِرهُمwait for them حَتَّىuntil يُنهواthey finish اِستِعراضَهُمtheir display
اِنتَظِرهُم حَتَّى يُنهوا اِستِعراضَهُم
They closed their eyes on the pretext of change
Wait for them until they finish their display
تَتَساقَطُfall out أَسنانُهُمtheir teeth
تَتَساقَطُ أَسنانُهُم
ولاand do not يَنحَنونَthey bend down لاِلتِقاطِهاto pick them up .
ولا يَنحَنونَ لاِلتِقاطِها .
Their teeth fall out
and they do not bend down to pick them up.

لاnot يَمَلُّونَthey tire مِنof مَلَلِهمtheir boredom
لا يَمَلُّونَ مِن مَلَلِهم

They do not tire of their boredom
فيin اِنتظارِwaiting for مَواعيدappointments
في اِنتظارِ مَواعيد
وُعِدواthey were promised بِهاthem ولَكِنَّand yet أَحَداًanyone
وُعِدوا بِها ولَكِنَّ أَحَداً
waiting for appointments
they were promised, and yet no one
لمdid not يَعِدهُمpromise them بِإيفائهاthat they would be kept
لم يَعِدهُم بِإيفائها
فأَغمَضواso they closed عُيونَهُمtheir eyes
فأَغمَضوا عُيونَهُم

so they closed their eyes

كَي تَغدو الفوارِقُ أَبسَطَ ما تَكون
فيin اِنتقالِهِمtheir passage مِنfrom عُنصُرٍan element إلىto آخَرanother
في اِنتقالِهِم مِن عُنصُرٍ إلى آخَر
so that the differences become as simple as can be
in their passage from one element to another
وكَأَنَّهand as though it لَمnot يَبقremained عَليهِمfor them
وكَأَنَّه لَم يَبق عَليهِم
سِوىexcept أَنto يُبدِلواthey change
سِوى أَن يُبدِلوا
and as though nothing remained for them
but to change
الجانِبَthe side
الجانِبَ
الَّذيthat يَنامونَthey sleep عَليهon it .
الَّذي يَنامونَ عَليه .

يُمكِنُit is possible لأَحَدٍfor anyone أَنto يَلمَحَهُglimpse it

without an inhalation or exhalation

يَدخُلُit enters ويَخرُجُand it leaves مِنfrom أَفواهِهِمtheir mouths

كأَعمالٍ اِعتادَت عِلى القِيامِ بِها
بِلاwithout إرادَةvolition
بِلا إرادَة
like tasks habitually performed
without volition
شِفاهُهُمtheir lips .

Erasing every trace of his interventions
in their affairs
اللَّهُGod الَّذيwho لمdid not يَجِدfind لَدَيهِat his disposal
اللَّهُ الَّذي لم يَجِد لَدَيهِ
فيin النِّهايةthe end

God, who found he had
in the end
ماanything يَفعَلُهُhe does it لأَجلِهمfor their sake
ما يَفعَلُهُ لأَجلِهم
سِوىexcept أَنto يَهرُبَhe flees مِنهمfrom them .
سِوى أَن يَهرُبَ مِنهم .
nothing to do for them
but flee from them.

الفائضونَthose in excess عَنbeyond حاجَاتِهِمtheir needs .

الَّتيthat سَتَأتيwill come فيin طَلَبِهمpursuit of them
الَّتي سَتَأتي في طَلَبِهم
وتَجِدُهمand find them حَيثُwhere غادَرواthey left

that will come in search of them
and find them where they left
بِكَونِهمbecause they أَسقَطواdropped
بِكَونِهم أَسقَطوا
بُذورَهَمtheir seeds
