    and catch fire?

    /

    Laughing, he wakes before me.

    And at noon I return

    and thrown the kitchen pots

    to the ground.

    /

    "You're mad!"

    He mocks my prayer

    because my words,

    he says,

    come out of my mouth!

And if I call to him from

beneath the quilt of my silence,

    he stretches out his hand

    and feels with his fingers

    /

    my heart.

    /

    evil and harm—

    because I deserve it.

    /

    /

    He blames me:

I did not come, though we had no appointment,

    yet he did not come

because he called me before our appointment

    by two hours,

    or after our appointment

    by three hours,

    but do not find him.

    I say to myself:

    "What am I doing here!"

    And if he comes,

the first thing he says to me is:

    "What are you doing here!"

  36. /

    /

And if he is away from me for two days,

    he says:

    "This means that you can

live without me for a year."

And if he is away for a week

    /

    Whenever there ripens within me

a fruit of love for him,

I pluck it and bring it close to his mouth,

    ( ليسَت لي

    holding it by its branch.

    "It is not for me;

    eat it alone."

    Or:

"Take it far away from me

and eat it with someone else."

    Or perhaps he says:

"Leave it; I'll eat it tomorrow."

    So it spoils and dies

    because never

    has a day come

he pulls me by my hair

He pushes me into the darkness

    while standing behind me.

And if I collide with a wall

or a chair or a table,

I reach out my hand to hold on to him,

    but do not find him.

And no sooner do I sit, panting,

on the edge of the bed

than I hear him scolding me:

"Do you, whenever an opportunity comes your way,

    seize it?

You did not come because I

    begged you to come,

    but because you

    love

    to come.

You do not care about my pleasure

    except because it is

    a condition for your pleasure."

    And I, beside him,

    breathe in

    a glimmer

    of the scent

    of his armpits...
