يَنامُsleeps بِقَسوَةwith harshness
يَنامُ بِقَسوَة
يَحلُمُdreams بِقَسوَةwith harshness
يَحلُمُ بِقَسوَة
He sleeps harshly
He dreams harshly
حَولَهُaround him لَمdid not يَكُنbe سِوىanything but
حَولَهُ لَم يَكُن سِوى
حَيواناتِهِhis animals وشَياطينِهand his demons
حَيواناتِهِ وشَياطينِه
Around him there was nothing but
his animals and his demons
ومَلائكَتِهِand his angels الَّذينَwho يَتَظاهَرونَpretend
ومَلائكَتِهِ الَّذينَ يَتَظاهَرونَ
بأَنَّهُمthat they are مَشغولونَbusy عَنهُaway from him
بأَنَّهُم مَشغولونَ عَنهُ
and his angels, who pretend
to be too busy for him
واللَّهand God.

لاno بُدَّalternative أَنthat يَكونَbe
لا بُدَّ أَن يَكونَ
And God—
it must be that
أَفضَلُthe best ماwhat قامَundertook بِصُنعِهِto make it
أَفضَلُ ما قامَ بِصُنعِهِ
هُوit is آخِرُthe last ماwhat قامَundertook بِصُنعِهِto make it
هُو آخِرُ ما قامَ بِصُنعِهِ
the best thing he made
is the last thing he made
مُتَلافياًavoiding أَخطاءَهُhis mistakes الكَثيرَةmany
مُتَلافياً أَخطاءَهُ الكَثيرَة
فيin المَوادِthe materials وفيand in الخَلطَةِthe mixture
في المَوادِ وفي الخَلطَةِ
avoiding his many mistakes
in the materials and in the mixture
وفيand in القالَبthe mold
وفي القالَب
حينَwhen وَجَدَfound العالَمَthe world وَحيداًalone
حينَ وَجَدَ العالَمَ وَحيداً
and in the mold
when he found the world lonely
يَمشيwalks ذَهاباًforth وإياباًand back
يَمشي ذَهاباً وإياباً
دُونَwithout مَقصَدa destination
دُونَ مَقصَد
walking to and fro
without a destination
يَلُفُّcircles حَولَaround نفسِهِhimself
يَلُفُّ حَولَ نفسِهِ
بِلاwithout نِهايةend
بِلا نِهاية
circling around himself
without end
لَيسَnot لَدَيهِhe has ماanything يَقولُهُsays it لأَحَدto anyone
لَيسَ لَدَيهِ ما يَقولُهُ لأَحَد
أَوor لاnot يَقولُهُsays it لأَحَدto anyone
أَو لا يَقولُهُ لأَحَد
He has nothing to say to anyone
or not to say to anyone
لأَنَّهbecause he لَيسَnot لَدَيهِhe has أَحَدanyone
لأَنَّه لَيسَ لَدَيهِ أَحَد
وليسَand not لَديهِhe has ماanything يَفعَلُهُdoes it اليَومtoday
وليسَ لَديهِ ما يَفعَلُهُ اليَوم
because he has no one
and he has nothing to do today
أَوor يُؤَجِّلُهُpostpones it للغَدuntil tomorrow
أَو يُؤَجِّلُهُ للغَد
كَيso that يَكونَbe لَدَيهِhe has غَدa tomorrow
كَي يَكونَ لَدَيهِ غَد
or to put off until tomorrow
so that he may have a tomorrow
حينَwhen وَجدَهُfound him ناقِصاًlacking
حينَ وَجدَهُ ناقِصاً
النَّقصُthe lack الضَّئيلslight
النَّقصُ الضَّئيل
when he found him lacking
the slight lack
الَّذيwhich مَهماhowever much بَلَغَتreached ضَآلَتُهits slightness
الَّذي مَهما بَلَغَت ضَآلَتُه
يَبقىremains فارِغاًempty.
يَبقى فارِغاً.
which, however slight it may be,
remains empty.

فهوَfor he يَعلَمُknows
فهوَ يَعلَمُ

For he knows
مَرَّةًonce خلَقَcreated مِسخاًa monster
مَرَّةً خلَقَ مِسخاً
لأَنَّهُbecause he لَمdid not يَضَعput فيin داخِلِهِits interior
لأَنَّهُ لَم يَضَع في داخِلِهِ
he once created a monster
because he had not put inside it
قَلباًa heart
قَلباً
ثُمَّthen وضَعَput فيin داخِلِهِits interior قَلباًa heart
ثُمَّ وضَعَ في داخِلِهِ قَلباً
a heart
then he put a heart inside it
لَكِنَّهُbut he لَمdid not يَضَعput فيin قَلبِهِits heart
لَكِنَّهُ لَم يَضَع في قَلبِهِ
شَهوَةًdesire
شَهوَةً
but he did not put in its heart
desire
فلَمso did not يُطلِقlet out صَرخَةًa cry
فلَم يُطلِق صَرخَةً
ولَمand did not يَفتَحopen
ولَم يَفتَح
so it did not let out a cry
and did not open
عَيناًan eye
عَيناً
ولَمand did not يَنتَصِبbecome erect مِنهُfrom it
ولَم يَنتَصِب مِنهُ
an eye
nor did there rise erect from it
عُضوٌa member.

وتَعلَمينَand you know أَنِّيthat I رَغمَdespite جُوعيmy hunger
وتَعلَمينَ أَنِّي رَغمَ جُوعي
فَضَّلتُكِI preferred you عَنover جَنَّتيmy paradise
فَضَّلتُكِ عَن جَنَّتي
And you know that, despite my hunger,
I preferred you to my paradise
