وَدَعِيand leave كُرُومِيَmy vineyards.. إِنَّهَاindeed they are أَحْطَابُfirewood
Do not believe in me: I am the liar.
Do not believe me.. I am the liar
And leave my vineyards: they are firewood.
And leave my lies.. they are just ashes
وَلْتَهْجُرِيand forsake عَطَشَthe thirst المَفَاوِزِthe deserts فِيin دَمِيmy blood

لاَdo not تَأْمُلِيhope for مُزْنِيmy rainclouds فَهُنَّfor they are سَرَابُa mirage
And forsake the thirst of deserts in my blood.
And abandon the thirst of mirages in my blood
Do not hope for my rainclouds, for they are a mirage.
Do not hope for my image, they are just mirages
فَأَنَاfor I am المُكَفَّرُthe one branded an unbeliever فِيin المَحَبَّةِlove دَائِمًاalways

وَهَوَايَand my love لِلَّعْنِto damnation المُؤَبَّدِeternal بَابُa door
For I am forever branded an unbeliever in love.
For I am the blasphemer in love forever
And my love is a doorway to eternal damnation.
And my passion is for the eternal damnation
وَهُدَاكِand your guidance فِيin هَجْرِيleaving me فَخَافِيso fear لَعْنَتِيmy curse

And your right path lies in leaving me, so fear my curse.
And your guidance in leaving me so fear my curse
And go your way—no reproach rests on you.
And go your way.. I have no blame on you

For I am just a misguided letter.. and mist
مَاnot كُنْتُI was فِيin حَرَمِthe sanctuary الأَمَانِيthe hopes نَاسِكًاan ascetic

I was no ascetic in the sanctuary of hopes.
I was not devout in the sanctity of wishes
Nor had I a scripture in my passion for them.
Nor did I have a scripture in loving them
بَلْrather كُنْتُI was فِيin شَرْعِthe law الصَّبَابَةِardent longing بَاطِلاًa falsehood
وَغَدًاa scoundrel غَوِيًّاwayward مَاno لَهُfor him مِحْرَابُa prayer niche
Rather, under the law of longing, I was a falsehood,
But I was vain in the law of youth
A wayward scoundrel with no prayer niche.
And tomorrow astray without direction
فَاسْتَبْرِئِيso cleanse yourself مِنْfrom رِجْسِthe defilement قُرْبِيmy nearness.. وَارْحَلِيand depart
فَأنَاfor I am الغِوَايَةُtemptation.. والمَدَىand the expanse المُرْتَابُdoubt-ridden
So cleanse yourself of the defilement of my nearness, and depart.
So free yourself from the filth of my nearness.. and leave
For I am temptation, and the doubt-ridden expanse.
For I am misguidance.. and the endless unknown
وَأَنَاand I am الجَحِيمُhell كَفُورَةٌfaithless حَيَّاتُهُits serpents
وَحَيَاتُهُand its life الأَوْجَاعُthe pains والأَوْصَابُand the afflictions
And I am hell, whose serpents are faithless,
And I am hell, its snakes are ungrateful
And whose life is pain and affliction.
And its life is pains and difficulties
وَأَنَاand I am الرَّجِيمُthe accursed صَلاَتُهُhis prayer مَرْدُودَةٌrejected

وَدُعَاؤُهُand his supplication فيin العَالَمِينَthe worlds تَبَابُruin
And I am the accursed, whose prayer is rejected,
And I am the outcast, his prayer is rejected
And whose supplication throughout the worlds is ruin.
And his call in the worlds is confusion
وَأَنَاand I am الصَّبَاحُthe morning عَمِيَّةٌblind لَفَتَاتُهُits glances

And I am the morning, whose glances are blind.
And I am the morning, its twilight is blind
And its eyes are disowned by the lashes.
And its eyes have denied it the eyelids
وَأَنَاand I am الأُحَيْمِقُthe little fool قَدْalready رَأَىhe saw بَيْنَamong الصَّحَاthe deserts (first fragment)

His meadow.. so the firewood collector fell for it

وَحَوَاهُand engulfed him فيin دَغْلِthe thicket الأَفَاعِيthe vipers غَابُa forest
So he went on fornicating with his dream in the darkness of night.
And went violating his dream in the darkness
And a forest engulfed him in a thicket of vipers.
And it engulfed him in the marshes of snakes
مَوْتِيmy death حَيَاتِيmy life.. والغَرَامُand passionate love جِنَازَتِيmy funeral

والعُمْرُand the lifespan قَبْرِيmy grave.. والثِّيَابُand the clothes تُرَابُdust
My death is my life, and love my funeral.
My death is my life.. and passion is my funeral
And life is my grave, and clothing is dust.
And life is my grave.. and clothes are soil

My torment comes from me, and my ribs are my hell.
From me is my torment and ribs are my hell
And fire is my watering place, and boiling water my drink.
And fire is my flower.. and pus is my drink

So when I walk, a curse is poured forth.
So when I walk, curse is poured
And when I turn, there are arrows and spears.
And when I turn around, there are arrows and wars

And when I eat, there is poisoned carrion.
And when I taste, it is rotten corpse
And when I drink, the honey of my cup is bitter sap.
And when I drink, the honey of my cup is pain
وَإِذَاand when عَشِقْتُI love فَشَاهِدٌthen a witness لِضَلاَلَتِيto my straying

And when I love, it bears witness to my straying.
And when I love, it testifies to my misguidance
And when I tell the truth, I am indeed the liar.
And when I am truthful.. I am the liar

So cleanse yourself of the defilement of my passion, and depart.
So free yourself from the filth of my love and leave
And go about your affairs—no reproach rests on you!
And go your way.. I have no blame on you!
