I have fallen slain in love's arena,

And the fair deem my blood lawful to shed.

I no longer know which arrow struck me down,

Carried my heart away by night and chose it as an intimate companion,

Then showed it the signs of love that I see,

And quenched its thirst with wine from a brimming cup,

And cast it, gravely lovesick, into the valley of yearning,

Neither a supplicant to be hoped for nor one to be petitioned.

O her enchantment, you stoked the blaze in my heart,

And drove me shackled to her inferno.

What recourse have I, while embers sear my soul

And trace within it a path to destruction?

What recourse have I, when love has become my captor

And my heart's recesses have been utterly subdued to it?

O her kohl-lined gaze, O fountain of death,

Honey-sweet, O its keen, unsheathed sword!

You fed me hopes, then inscribed upon love's tablet

My death, O her kohl-lined gaze.

And left my heart a prayerward focus for burning pangs,

And made my tears their draught, drunk time and again.

What if you had made for your lovers

A garden and a resting place beneath your lashes' shade?

And openly granted them the litanies of your kohl,

So they might chant their tale in measured recitation?

And gazed at this stricken lover of yours with a glance

That revives his hopes and awakens what he longs for?

Ah, O bird that pecks from my heart

Its grain and its love-stricken covering,

And sees in the heart's embers the sweetest of its dates,

And sees my burning at forenoon as a lamp,

And fashions from my heart's artery, for love of it,

    Lyres, and from the heartbeat a dove's coo;

And settles among my ribs and thoughts

As sleeplessness that wanders long through my visions.

O her lips, woven from the book of flame

Into a song and a guide to torment,

Will you not reveal some of what the heart has hidden

Of love's anguish, and inscribe it in kisses?

Limbs you have worn out have testified against you

Through concealment, sighs, and wasting away.

The limbs' confession in love is proof,

And their truthful speech is the soundest utterance.

    فِقْهُ الهَوَى لا يَعْرِفُ التَّأْوِيلاَ

    Love is clearer than any trick of interpretation;

The understanding of passion knows no reinterpretation.

So proclaim love's command in passion's sanctuary,

And set aside your guarded reserve in love awhile.

How sweet it would be to confess a word

That embodies the very life of life.

How delectable for its blend to be

Musk in your saliva, a honey-sweet Kawthar.

Say it—'I love you'—and surely win its reward:

    Pure love, enduring and unbroken.

Say it, and free it as longing; for you are

Freed by it, and crowned with a wreath.

The sin, the whole sin, is burying feelings alive

In the well of your silence, quenching no burning thirst,

Thirsting, scorched by your blaze, and hoping

Always for a downpour from your clouds of confession.

O her heart, veiled between ribs

With a love-distraught beat, practicing renunciation,

Alas for you, set ablaze by yearning,

And desire carving a Nile within your depths.

You show aversion, though the heart is crazed with love,

And seek graceful patience in resisting your passion.

How can a lovesick one overcome his love

And accept the counsel of those who reproach him?

How can a heart slaughter its own pulse

And be seen as a ruthless killer of its lovers' souls?

    والْعُمْرُ لَوْ تَرْضَى يَكُونُ عَدِيلاَ

    My heart is your ransom, beloved, and so is my soul;

And my life, if you consent, shall be a matching ransom.

We are one heart with two beating hearts,

Both burning with yearning and bewilderment,

Embracing across distance in whispered communion,

Separated in dwelling and in tribe.

We share longings, the burning of a lover,

That drenches us both in anguish and wailing.

Tears rain grief into our heart's dark core,

And blaze with passion morning and evening.

We live as wounds brimming with wasting pain,

And head toward a cloudy, unknown horizon.

And we ask God for guidance out of our waywardness,

And He inscribes within us His fulfilled decree.
