Spend Eid day with your toys,

for I spent my Eid with cannons.

There is no difference between us, children:

toys fly like bombers of iron.

The difference between us is that I see

what you have not seen: trembling and soldiers.

I know the bombardment you know nothing

about, and I know the threatening cry.

The difference is that I do not sleep when stillness settles

over my night, while your night is spent in slumber.

My Eid gift in the morning is a bullet,

and you celebrate Eid with a toy and money.

A patched garment upon me does me no harm,

nor does your wearing everything new at Eid.

I fought in childhood, and my greatest weapon

is endurance, with which I melt mountains of ice.

If a thorn pricked a child, there would be no rest

for your fathers without a thousand bandages.

And I walk upon blood, drenched

in blood that I staunch by binding my vein.

You weep for a few moments when your

toys break, while my tears never leave my cheeks.

O children, I am like you:

a child; I watered my roses for my dreams.

Do you have sweets? For I have found nothing

but a loaf, half of it for the worms.

Do you laugh and play? For I

spend the day in my bewilderment and distraction.

One day I saw my father die, and my grandmother

weeping and embracing him: 'My little son, my only one!'

And I saw my mother, when they took her away,

gazing at me, her purity buried alive.

Everyone around me has a heart struck with fear

for a father, a wife, and a newborn child.

    These lands—my home—are no longer

the home that sheltered my father and forefathers.

The homes of the innocent were crushed; what remains

of the splendor of their design and construction?

The homes of those living in safety became their graves:

corpses, rubble, and a thousand lost loved ones.

The earth called to me, the earth I had flooded

with my tears and enlivened with my prostrations.

O innocent child's smile, it is a crime

that you should be slaughtered in anguish by a hate-filled eye.

I have never, children, envied you

your comfortable life in the shade of temptations.

Keep your toys to yourselves at your Eid,

for I have toys made of gunpowder.

I am no longer a child, for nothing quenches the thirst

of my heart but a life like that of lions.

Do not interrupt your games on television,

for a martyr's blood may appear.

Your souls may recoil from a corpse

appearing after the alluring, graceful women.

I ask no pity from your fathers,

for I am most unyielding toward my enemies.

     من عاش بالتوحيد غير وحيدِ

    They said, 'Alone.' I said, 'Guidance is not lost;

whoever lives by faith in God's oneness is not alone.'

They said, 'An outcast.' I said, 'In your dictionary—

or is there a word for 'outcast' along God's path?'

I could never endure a life of humiliation,

like a falcon that hates to live in chains.

A child, yet I do not belong to childhood, for I

have surpassed men in my resolve and steadfastness.
