My soul be your ransom if poems cannot ransom you.

Love for you is a sea, and my heart a sailor upon it.

My soul, my innards, and the flood of my blood be your ransom.

A heart surging with love's pulse be your ransom.

Mother, Mother, O melody of love in my mouth,

O sweet of soul, poetry is bewildered by you.

O sweetest name that my rhyme has sung:

“My mother”—and reverence fills my heart's banks.

Were I to lay the universe in your palms, my precious one,

the whole universe would not repay a tenth of your due.

O you in whose womb I turned for a time,

wading, weighed down by the stages of my forming.

I would ransom you, O cry that burst from her breast

on the day of labor, as her frail body collapsed.

O eye that kept vigil, O tear that was shed,

O moan from whose heat fire itself froze.

I would ransom you, O candle whose tresses weep,

so lights illuminate the path for those who travel by night.

I would ransom you, Mother, O pulse of love in my blood.

If you are a pearl, the heart is an oyster.

O you who kept vigil to tend my moans, while on

your eyelids tears surged with hopes.

When I fell ill, you kept vigil through the night, stretching out

the palm of prayer, while tears poured from your eye.

You wipe away tears that cannot be wiped away

by any hand, nor could a patient soul stop them by wiping.

The whisper of your sweet echo still carries me,

and in its wings are refinement and remembrance.

Since I was a child, playfully teasing you with my toys,

until years of life followed like flashes of lightning.

You chide me—yes—and bestow your balm

when troubles cloud the purity of my bearing.

    My Lord, do not deprive me of her lovely face;

should she be lost, my eyes would have no sight!

Mother, Mother, I have in every corner

of our home a smile that makes the house sweet.

I long for every place where I used to sit

with you, and remembrance burns me with longing.

I long for your glorification of God, pouring forth

like honey, led onward by recitation and invocations.

Your prayer niche, your night, your praises are a language

from whose outpouring the bewildered find their way to light.

You taught me to view my worldly life with disdain

when people hold it in high esteem.

You taught me that it is a sea we wrestle with,

and the sea is treacherous, however time rolls on.

You taught me dignity in an age in which

lords and scholars were debased through sycophancy.

You taught me the purest learning in a time

when ideas were tainted by education.

How noble is an unlettered woman whose wellsprings are pure,

in an age of knowledge, most of it shrouded in shame!

You read no books; you held no pen,

yet your nurturing is abundant as the sea.

Were there only one letter dāl—the title “Dr.”—among people,

and were it given a choice, it would come to choose you alone!

Mother, O smile of the world and its adornment,

my feelings collapse beneath the grandeur of love.

Mother, O musk of this whole universe,

O pearl enfolded in purity by an oyster.

O fairest in creation! Whoever called you “Jewel”

is sweet of utterance, yet bewildered by such beauty.

I could almost swear the full moon envies you,

fearing, if you appear, its nightly companions will shun it.

And were you set to stand in the full moon's place,

no eyes would look beyond you, O angel of beauty!

Your beauty has no flaw except your noble virtues:

purity of character forms veils over beauty.

Mother, in loving you, not even

my heart rivals me; in love I have precedence and resolve.

You are the sovereign; yours are a throne and a kingdom

in my heart's courtyard, and crowns and secrets.

You are the pupil of my eye; you are the warmth of my blood.

You are love—rain for the heart's wastelands.

You are dew in tenderness, perfume in fragrance.

You are tenderness—rivers from love's wellspring.

God has enjoined me, Mother, to honor you,

and traditions have bound my neck fast to that duty.

“And do not say ‘uff’ to either of them”—could I utter it?

Woe to me then—a woe of disgrace, followed by the Fire!

Mother, your bounty is a sea that cannot be encompassed

by songs and poems pouring from my heart.

    واللهُ إن تغفري يا أمّ غفَّارُ

    Your pleasure with me is my soul's desire and goal;

and God, if you forgive, Mother, is ever-forgiving.

    فليسترحْ برضاكم عنه بحَّارُ

    There is no bottom in your sea, Mother, that we can reach;

so let a sailor rest in your approval of him.
