Why do your two hands bury a lifetime's past?

Have you forgotten me, or has self-conceit beguiled you?

Months have passed, and you have paid no heed to our parting,

And you did not turn toward my heart when it called you.

I used to confide my grief to you so you might bury it.

Who, then, will bury the sorrows your memory brings me?

I recall yesterday through memory, so it may make me forget

Today's bitterness. Who, O yesterday, made you sweet?

Indeed, I ask a heart in which I once knew

Love's tenderness: who, O heart, hardened you?

Yesterday, you could not bear to leave me

For a single day—who, after this separation, strengthened you?

These years have passed; you never came to ask me

About what you wounded and what your two hands made bleed!

By God, not for a moment were you absent from me—and how often

I stayed awake, calling your ways back to mind.

Even if you have drawn far from an eye in which you dwelt,

Who can draw the phantom of your memory away from me?

I found a path in the night of separation that brings us together.

I never severed my hopes of meeting you.

Won't you look at the full moon I spent the night watching,

So that my eye and your eyes may meet there!

You taught me and made the heart a cultivated field.

May my heart be your ransom; indeed, the heart is your pasture.

    فاصبر على البعد واستحمل خطاياكَ

    I have resolved, my friend, to forget you, keeping my distance;

So bear the separation, and endure your sins.

Yes, I will forget you—but only after a miracle:

If I forget my heart, I will forget you!
