And my heart has grown used to wandering's anguish.

    No pain hurts it anymore!

We now console one another when we remember them:

God decreed separation—how can we prevent it?

When I depart, a vision of him keeps me company.

Longing has made me hear the one I do not hear!

And if I pass a place that once brought us together,

Longing overflows, and its ribs grow tight with it.

Who is it that will depart? Farewell has grown bewildered by us.

I wonder: do I bid farewell to my soul, or to him?

The world grows narrow after him—oh, my sorrow

For the time he makes spacious through togetherness.

If I have been hiding in my heart what I endure

Of longing—can its tears remain hidden?

I placed him in God's care—may He protect him.

My longing must bring me and him together.
