The world before you exhausts the heart and mind.

So, O my mind, be gentle; and you, my eye, take your time.

Reformers have been bewildered by it, and it has baffled

the exceptional philosopher’s intellect and the masterful poet.

Enigmas defy the mind’s understanding, so it bows

in submission to them, however much it grows proud and exalts itself.

A human being lives in it as a child, even if he seems

middle-aged in his own eyes; then he leaves it a child.

Up to his words: And seek refuge in faith’s sanctuary, and be content with what has been decreed

by God; and know that His wisdom is supreme.

So religion has value in life, for it,

without guidance, becomes a hell in which we burn.

And trust that He who gave life its beauty

and its sustenance has not neglected the worms and the ants.
