مضى السلف الأبرار يعبق ذكرهم

مضى السلف الأبرار يعبق ذكرهم

 فسيروا كما سار على الدهر واصنعوا

فسيروا كما سار على الدهر واصنعوا

The righteous forebears have passed on; their memory wafts fragrance.

The virtuous ancestors have passed, their mention fragrant,

So walk as they walked through time, and create.

So walk as they walked throughout time and act.

وما الفخر بالماضي إذا لم يكن له

وما الفخر بالماضي إذا لم يكن له

 من الحاضر الزاهي بناء مرفع

من الحاضر الزاهي بناء مرفع

And what pride is there in the past if it has no

For what is pride in the past if it has not

Lofty edifice built from the radiant present?

From the flourishing present a lofty building.

خذوا بأكف الأسد من أسهم العلى

خذوا بأكف الأسد من أسهم العلى

نصيبًا فإن الحاضر اليوم أوسع

نصيبًا فإن الحاضر اليوم أوسع

Take, with lions' paws, from the shares of glory

Take with the claws of lions from the arrows of sublimity

A portion, for the present today offers greater scope.

A share, for the present today is more ample.

يد الدهر لا تسخو بمجد لعاجز

يد الدهر لا تسخو بمجد لعاجز

 ضعيف ولا تندي ولا تتبرع

ضعيف ولا تندي ولا تتبرع

Time's hand lavishes no glory on one helpless

The hand of time is not generous with glory to a helpless

And weak; it neither showers bounty nor gives freely.

Weak one, nor calls out, nor volunteers.

وما قيمة الأوطان إن لم يكن لها

وما قيمة الأوطان إن لم يكن لها

 "رجال" يلوذون الشقاء لينفعوا

"رجال" يلوذون الشقاء لينفعوا

And what are homelands worth if they have no

And what is the value of homelands if it does not have

"Men" who seek refuge in hardship so they may be of service?

"Men" who embrace misery in order to benefit.

جرت حكمة الدنيا على الناس أنها

جرت حكمة الدنيا على الناس أنها

 تصد لمن صدوا وتسعى لمن سعوا

تصد لمن صدوا وتسعى لمن سعوا

The world's wisdom has held sway over people: it

The wisdom of the world has flowed to people that it

Turns away from those who turn away, and strives for those who strive.

Withstands those who withstood and strives for those who strove.

حصدنا الضنى لما زرعنا له المنى

حصدنا الضنى لما زرعنا له المنى

 وجل حصاد المرء من حيث يزرع

وجل حصاد المرء من حيث يزرع

We reaped suffering when we sowed wishes for it,

We reaped sorrow when we sowed it wishes

And most of one's harvest comes from where one sows.

And little is a man's harvest from where he sows.
