O physician of eyes, my eyes' complaint

Comes from the glances of one fashioned like a houri.

And it is an eye that knows no hostile sidelong gaze,

Nor has it worn any kohl but enchantment.

So be gentle with it, for in its hidden sleep

Lie the secrets of a hidden world.

Indeed, within it are my heart's dreams and my longings,

And the phantoms of my youthful passion, and sorrows.

And it is dearer than clan and wealth,

And dearer than every precious thing.

Indeed, O physician, it is my greatest window

Onto the cosmos, visions, and the arts.

And it is my bridge to life and my balloon,

And in life's deep sea, my ships.

And it yearns for the fair one, never ceasing

To be intoxicated by that fair one's beauty.

And it gazes at the sorrowful one, then weeps

In grief, from anguish for that sorrowful one.

And it gazes at the blemished one, then grows sore,

Out of mercy, not gloating over the blemished one.

And it yearns for every line in a book,

And each marginal note within the texts.

And it is water—how, then, can you extract water

From water with the sharpened edge?

How can you run the knife through it, when within it

Is a tenderness that cannot bear the eyelids' whisper?

And at a word it melts in shyness,

From love's reproach and an intimate companion's blame.

So let the secrets of Jesus be in your hands,

And his guidance, and the miracles of the Trustworthy One.

     وأنت الطيب فالطف بعيني

    O my God, my eye has been gouged out for medicine;

And You are the Benevolent One, so be gentle with my eye.
