Have mercy: longing has reached its utmost limit.

Will you not pity the wasted, sorrowful, sleepless one?

And grant your mercy: the one maddened by separation

is in so grievous a state that even enemies pity him.

    وَسَل حالَهُ إِن شئتَ ذاكَ فَتَشهَدا

    So do not ask the distraught lover what has befallen him;

ask his condition, if you wish, and you will see.

He is the enamored one: the anguish of his love gains

nothing but fiercer flame whenever he tries to quench it.

For yearning and passion have left him no

fortitude to bear the burdens of ardent love.

How often lovers' infatuation has ravaged them,

burning entrails and tearing livers apart!

    وَحُبُّ الفَتى يعمِيه عَن سبلِ الهُدى

    How often love has robbed men of their minds;

a young man's love blinds him to the paths of guidance.

So do not marvel at a tear I have shed

over a time that once brought happiness at the valley bend.

How beautiful that time, how sweet its memory!

May generous clouds water it with rain again and again.

And, by God, what a life in the sanctuary, granted by

lovely nights—how delightful and full of ease!

Nights that good fortune governed at their rising,

so they were as it wished: blessing and good fortune.

Whenever my soul recalls neighbors there,

it awakens longing that sets it rising and sitting.

How often the turtledove sang on a thicket's supple bough,

and I answered that singing dove.

I said: May God spare you what you fear,

and may you be lodged in the great trees in a prepared nest.

For you have reminded me of a time gone by,

when joy appointed a rendezvous for pleasure,

    إِذا بَلِيَ الإِيناسُ فيهِ تَجَدّدا

    passing a cup of delight beneath the sarh trees' shade;

whenever companionship grew stale there, it was renewed.

Yet what has passed will not return,

nor can imagination bring near what has grown remote.

But now the riding camels have been bridled, and they have set out

to visit Ahmad, the best of humankind and jinn.

So a lightning flash from the direction of Taybah has stirred my longing,

making the yearning spirit forget what it was accustomed to.

And the camel-driver roused me as he sang,

repeating behind the pale camels the murmuring camel-song.

Gently, O driver of the camels, for I

am calling God's Messenger, letting him hear my call.

Hear, O Messenger of God, the plea of one who stayed,

left behind the travelers and alone.

He has no excuse but his weakness, for he

has donned a loose robe of helplessness and cloaked himself in it.

The injustice of the age and its people has bound him,

so he complains to you of a time that has wronged him.

And of his own soul, O proof of God, he complains,

for it is what cast him into the abyss of ruin.

Through your rank he calls upon God, master of his affairs,

to free him from what has held him bound.

For he has no refuge, O son of the ‘Atikahs,

but you, and seeks no goal through anyone else.

For you have gathered every praiseworthy virtue,

and to seekers of generosity you are generosity's deep sea.

Over you the Banner of Praise is unfurled; Adam

and all beneath him stand under its outspread shade.

When God gathers all created beings,

you will be proclaimed master of those in that assembly.

You will be their intercessor, and will don from among

the ornaments of praise what increases honor and eminence.

You ascended to the highest heavenly layers and passed beyond them,

leaving behind Gabriel, the trustworthy and divinely supported.

And all this within a brief stretch of the night's darkness,

and you brought the lights of guidance to those who found guidance.

You raised the sun of truth from the horizon of exaltation,

and opened a bolted door to happiness.

You warned us of the fire of every misery,

and brought glad tidings to those who became upright, affirming God's oneness.

You drained a sea of error that had overflowed

over its people until it seethed and foamed.

You left the eye of idolatry weeping its blood

over those of its people who transgressed and rebelled.

At Badr you scattered the heads of their champions,

so they became refuse beside the well, cut into strips.

At al-Ahzab you brought sorrow to their Sakhr ibn Harb,

and sent him back disgraced, with everlasting disgrace.

You made every brown, slender spear an arbiter over them,

and every Indian-forged keen sword, like a flame.

With them charge those who emigrated and then fought,

and those who aided the upright, rightly directed faith.

They are the exalted company in the presence of divine favor,

and they laid the foundations of this lofty edifice.

They offered, in obedience to God, souls

    purified and seeking everlasting reward.

And you remained among them, O spirit of the worlds,

until you erased idolatry with an everlasting erasure.

God's victory and conquest came to you, and it pleased

God to grant you a seat in the highest gardens of Paradise.

And you became alive through divine favor, to build

for us established honor beside the Truth.

    فَآلك وَالذكرُ الحَكيم لَنا هُدى

    You left among us your family and the Revelation as arbiter;

so your family and the wise Revelation are guidance for us.

They are the two weighty trusts—may God bless them both,

and grant special favor to Muhammad, Commander of the Faithful,

your trusted successor, scion of caliphs,

the most august of earth's kings in glory and lineage,

    He multiplied armies resembling lions,

The earth shakes from them when they mount,

and the towering mountains tremble and sway.

You would think the air a fire ablaze,

at which the seeker of corruption cries out, driven to flight.

The wind of victory flutters among their banners,

over the brow of the victorious one, the noblest who goes forth,

    تَبَختَر وَاِقتادَ الخَميسَ المجنّدا

    who strides proudly and leads the mustered host;

the firmest in his structure of might and path of ascent.

and pardons the offender's sin when it appears.
