فقال: كلا فما كان الزواج سوى

he said: No—for marriage is nothing but

why should I imprison my heart in love for a woman,

A shackle that imprisons my heart's passion for a woman

ورب ذرية أخرجتُ فانبعثت

إني لأمرح في دنيا الجمال وفي

إني لأمرح في دنيا الجمال وفي

and many offspring I brought forth came to life,

How many offspring have I sired who were then born

I surely revel in the world of beauty, and among

I still play joyfully in the world of beauty and in

في كل يوم فتاة فجرت غدقاً

في كل يوم فتاة فجرت غدقاً

ولي من الغيد ليل باسم ألق

ولي من الغيد ليل باسم ألق

each day, a young woman pours forth a torrent

A different girl each day who flows with generosity

and with graceful women I have a smiling, radiant night,

And I have, from pleasure, a night named after me

قلنا: أأنت تباهي بالزنى فرحاً؟!

قلنا: أأنت تباهي بالزنى فرحاً؟!

فقال: بل ذاك شرع صار متبعاً

we said: Do you boast of adultery with delight?!

We said: Do you boast of adultery happily?!

he said: Rather, that is a law now followed,

He said: No, that became a followed law

قلنا: ألست تخاف الله منتقماً؟

ويح الشباب إذا الشيطان نازعهم

we said: Do you not fear God as He takes vengeance?

We said: Do you not fear God taking vengeance?

alas for the young when Satan contends with them

Alas for youth when the devil tempts them

ولا ترى النور إلا في محياها

ولا ترى النور إلا في محياها

وكن بحبك مهواها ومأماها

وكن بحبك مهواها ومأماها

and you see light nowhere but in her face.

And you see no light but in her cheek

And be, through your love, her heart's desire and her refuge.

And be, in your love for her, her supporter and protector

مغارم وقيود لست أرضاها

مغارم وقيود لست أرضاها

يظل محياي مرهوناً بمحياها

يظل محياي مرهوناً بمحياها

financial burdens and fetters I do not accept.

Passions and shackles I do not approve of

so that my life remains bound to hers?

My cheek will remain mortgaged to her cheek

البؤس يصحبها والنحس يغشاها

أزواج من عاش بكاء وأواها

with misery accompanying them and misfortune shrouding them.

Misery accompanies it and misfortune overwhelms it

the wives of those who live weeping and sighing.

في صحبة الكأس أسقيها وأُسقاها

of lovemaking, quenching my thirst and hers.

Of union abundant, she narrated and told

With the cup for company, I give her drink and am given it to drink.

Do you toy with people's honor so arrogantly?

Do you toy with honors pointlessly?

How many others before me have taken pride in it, and how many have boasted!

How many before me have gone astray by it and how many vaunt

فقال في قحة: لا أعرف الله

على العقول فأوهاها وألغاها

He said with insolence: I do not know God.

He said bluntly: I do not know God

over their minds, then weakens them and renders them useless!

Upon reason so he confused it and nullified it
