تردَّيْتُI plunged فيinto دَرْكٍan abyss رهيبٍdreadful مُعَسْعِسٍshrouded in darkness
فلمand did not يَلقَنيmeet me فيهin it سوىexcept الشَّنآنِhatred!
I plunged into a dreadful abyss shrouded in darkness,
I wandered in a terrible, gloomy prison
And nothing met me there but hatred!
Where I was met with nothing but hostility!
سوىonly زُمُرَةٍa band تَطْويfolds علىaround الشَّرِّevil أضْلُعاًribs
بكلَّin every مكانِplace فيin الدُّنَّىthe worlds.. وزمانِand time!
Only a band enfolding evil within its ribs,
Except for a group twisting their ribs toward evil
In every place in the worlds, and at every time!
In every place in this world.. and time!
ويبدوand appears بهاamong them الشيطانSatan جذلانjubilant راضياًcontent
فقدfor indeed كَسِبَwon الشَّيطانُSatan كلevery رَهَانِwager!
And among them Satan appears jubilant and content,
And through them Satan appears happy and content
For Satan has won every wager!
For Satan has won every bet!
فقُلْتُso I said لِنَفْسيto myself بعدafter أنthat ساءَgrew wretched مَنْزِليmy abode
لِيَto me الوَيْلُwoe مِمَّاbecause of what يكَتُبُwrite المَلَكانِthe two angels!
So I said to myself, after my abode had grown wretched:
So I said to myself after my dwelling worsened
Woe to me for what the two angels write!
Woe to me from what the two angels record!
ليto me الوَيْلُwoe بالرَّهطِbecause of the band الذينwho تَسَرْبَلواclothed themselves
بآثامِهمْin their sins منof شَهْوَةٍlust ودِنانِand wine jars!
Woe to me for the band who have robed themselves
Woe to me for the company who dressed
In their sins of lust and wine jars!
In their sins of desire and greed!
أأَمْكُثُshall I remain? فيin الدَّرْكِthe abyss المَهيَنِdegrading مُجَلَّلاًshrouded
بعاريin my shame . وفِكْريand my mind مُوثَقٌfettered وجِنانيand my heart؟!
Shall I remain in the degrading abyss, shrouded
Shall I remain in this disgraceful prison shackled
In my shame, with my mind and heart in fetters?!
In shame? While my thoughts and madness bind me?!
وناَديتُand I called out باسْمin the name of اللهGod أُرْسلُI send مَدمَعيmy tears..
شفيعاًas an intercessor إليهto Him منfrom قَذًىfilth وهَوانِand humiliation!
And I called out in God's name, sending my tears
And I called in the name of God, I send forth my tears..
As an intercessor before Him against filth and humiliation!
Pleading to Him from anguish and humiliation!
فأبْصرْتُthen I saw نُوراًa light أشَعَّshone بَيْنamid دُجُنَّةٍdeep darkness
ومنand from خَلْفِهِbehind it أَبْصَرْتُI saw طَيْفَa vision حَنانِtenderness!
Then I saw a light shining amid deep darkness,
Then I saw a light shine through the darkness
And behind it I saw a vision of tenderness!
And behind it I saw the specter of tenderness!
يقولit says : ألاcome! أصْعَدْclimb up! مِنfrom هناhere غَيْرَnot خائِفٍafraid
فأنْتَfor you بِمَنْأىّbeyond reach عنof أَذًىharm ولعانِand curses!
It says: Come, climb up from here unafraid,
Saying: Shall I not ascend from here without fear
For you are beyond the reach of harm and curses!
For you are safe from harm and curses!
نجَوْتَyou were saved بأيمانٍthrough faith رَكينٍsteadfast.. فلاso do not تَعُدْreturn
بِقَلْبٍwith a heart غَوِيٍّwayward للِهوىto desire. ولِسانِand a tongue!
You were saved through steadfast faith, so do not return
You were saved by confident faith.. so do not return
To desire, with a wayward heart and tongue!
With a misguided heart to passion. And the tongue!
وإلاَّand otherwise فماthen nothing للرُّوحِfor the soul سوىexcept اللَّظىblazing fire
سوىnothing but كلًّevery سْيفٍsword صارمٍkeen-edged. وسِنانِand a spearhead!
Otherwise, the soul has nothing but blazing fire,
Otherwise the soul has nothing but agony
Nothing but every keen-edged sword and spearhead!
Nothing but each unsheathed, sharpened sword. And fang!
فقُلْتُso I said معاذَrefuge in اللهGod أَنْthat أَدعَI let الهوىdesire
يَقُودُleads رِكابيmy mounts فيon السُّرىthe night journey . وعِنانيand my reins!
So I said: God forbid that I should let desire
So I said, I seek refuge in God that I leave desire
Guide my mounts and my reins on the night journey!
To lead my mount in the pathways. And my reigns!
فَحَسْبيso enough for me مِنof البأْساءِhardship ماwhat قدalready لَقِيتُهُI encountered it..
وحَسْبيand enough for me الذيwhat أَشْقىmade miserable مِنfrom النَّزَوانِrestless desire
Enough for me is the hardship I have already endured,
I have had my fill of tribulations from what I have faced..
And enough is what restless desire made me suffer!
And I have had my fill of what makes me more miserable than punishment
لقِيتُI encountered منfrom الشَّيطانِSatan كُلَّevery غِواَيةٍtemptation
ولاقَيْتُand I found رُشْديmy right guidance الصَّفْوpure منfrom بارئيmy Creator الحانيtender!
I encountered every temptation from Satan,
I have faced from Satan every temptation
And found my pure guidance from my tender Creator!
And I have faced my pure, rightful guidance from my Kind Maker!
فهذاso here is ضَميريmy conscience لاهِجٌever speaking بِهِباتِهِof His gifts
كَشَدْوِlike the singing of يَراعيmy reed pen مُخْيِتاًhumbly submissive.. وبَنانيand my fingertips!
So here is my conscience, ever speaking of His gifts,
So this is my conscience fervently roaring
Like the humble song of my reed pen and fingertips!
Like a lover engrossed in song.. and flutes!
دِنانٌwine jars وماand not أَهفوI yearn لِشُرْبِto drink رَحِيقِهاtheir nectar
وقدand indeed شِبْتُI have grown gray . أوor أهفوI yearn لِحُسْنfor the beauty of غَوانيlovely maidens!
Wine jars—yet I do not yearn to drink their nectar,
Passions and how I yearn to drink its wine
Now that I have grown gray, nor do I yearn for lovely maidens' beauty!
When I have grown old! Or yearn for the beauty of youth!
عقَقْتُI forsook الغَوانيthe lovely maidens والحِسانَand the beauties. ورَدَّنيand turned me back
عنfrom الَّلهْوِrevelry أنَّbecause الجِدَّearnestness منهfrom it ثنانيturned me away!
I forsook the lovely maidens and beauties; I was turned
I have severed ties with passions and flirts. And turned me
From revelry, since earnestness had turned me away from it!
Away from vanity that seriousness has scolded me!
شَجانيsaddened me ضَلاليmy straying فيin الشَّبابِyouth فَساءَنيand distressed me
وسَرَّand gladdened مَشِيبيmy old age الرُّشْدُright guidance حِينwhen شَجانيsaddened me!
My straying in youth stirred my sorrow and distressed me,
My misguidance in youth was injurious so it saddened me
And right guidance gladdened my old age when it stirred my sorrow!
And my elder prudence made me happy when it hurt me!
