ثقيلٌburdensome عَلَىto كلِّall الورىmankind منwhoever تكبرِacts arrogantly
ولوand if أنصفتْacted justly ساخَتsank بجثمانِهwith his body الأرضُthe earth
Whoever is arrogant is a burden to all mankind.
The proud are a burden upon all the earth,
And were the earth just, it would have swallowed his body.
And if the ground were fair, it would split open with their bodies.
ولوand if علِمknew العاصونَthe sinners فيin شرِّvilest دارهمtheir abode
شريكاًa companion لهمfor them هذاthis المذمَّمُthe much-reviled man لمdid not يرضُواthey consent
And if the sinners knew that, in their vilest abode,
If the wicked knew their companion was this despised one,
This much-reviled man was their companion, they would not consent.
They would not be pleased to have him as their partner.
فياso, O داءaffliction مَنwhoever يرنُوgazes إلىat قبحِthe ugliness of وجههhis face
وياand O مَنyou who علىupon كلِّall الورىmankind بغضهُhatred of him فرضُis obligatory
So, O affliction of whoever gazes at the ugliness of his face,
Oh what an affliction is he who inclines towards the ugliness of his face,
And O you whom all mankind is duty-bound to hate!
And oh he whom hatred of is obligatory upon all the earth!
لقدindeed ضاقَتِgrew narrow الدنياthe world علىَّfor me بأسْرهاin its entirety
مِنbecause of أخلاقهhis character واللوحُand the air والطولُand the length والعرضُand the breadth
The whole world has indeed grown narrow for me,
Truly, the world has become too narrow for me, with all its expanse,
Because of his character—and so have the air, length, and breadth.
Because of his character, his broadness, his height, and his width.
