ثلاث خصال يفسدُ المُلْكُ عندها

ثلاث خصال يفسدُ المُلْكُ عندها

ولا يستقيمُ الأمرُ إن هي حلَّتِ

ولا يستقيمُ الأمرُ إن هي حلَّتِ

Three traits corrupt a kingdom when they are present,

Three traits corrupt sovereignty when present:

and affairs cannot be set right if they take hold:

Governance goes not right if they persist.

فظلم الورى والبغيُ والجور ثالثٌ

فظلم الورى والبغيُ والجور ثالثٌ

ويصلح مُلكُ الملك إن هي وَلْتِ

ويصلح مُلكُ الملك إن هي وَلْتِ

namely, oppression of humankind, aggression, and tyranny as the third.

Oppression of subjects, tyranny, injustice—

The king's rule is set right if they depart.

The third—and rule grows sound if they desist.

مضَى عمري في حرث دنيا دنيَّةٍ

مضَى عمري في حرث دنيا دنيَّةٍ

ولم أرَ فيها من دوامٍ لحارثِ

ولم أرَ فيها من دوامٍ لحارثِ

My life has passed in tilling a base world,

My life I spent ploughing a lowly world,

and I have seen in it no permanence for any tiller.

And saw no constancy for any tiller.

وأشقى بجمع المالِ من كل وجهةٍ

وأشقى بجمع المالِ من كل وجهةٍ

وأبخلُ عن نفسي لأُسعِدَ وارِثي

وأبخلُ عن نفسي لأُسعِدَ وارِثي

And I toil to gather wealth from every quarter,

More wretched than gathering wealth every way

and deny myself to make my heir happy.

Is niggarding myself to make my heir happy.
