يقولونthey say إنthat الصبرpatience للمرءِfor a person عدةٌa resource
وذلكand that مشهورٌwell known ولاand not ينجحsucceeds الأمرُthe undertaking
They say that patience is a person's resource,
They say patience for a man is a virtue
And that is well known, yet the undertaking does not succeed.
This is well-known, but the matter does not succeed
ولكنand yet أرَىI see فيin الصبرpatience إنif دامَlasts مدةًa while
هموماًworries وأحزاناًand sorrows يضيقgrows constricted بهاbecause of them الصدرُthe breast
And yet I see in patience, if it lasts a while,
Yet I see that if patience lasts long
Worries and sorrows that constrict the breast.
It brings worries and sorrows that weigh down the heart
وفيهand in it أمورٌmatters معضلاتintractable قواطعٌobstructive

And in it are intractable, obstructive matters;
And there are perplexing matters, impassable obstacles
Land and sea grow narrow for whoever seeks them.
That are too narrow for one who desires righteousness and openness
وفيهand in it تباريحٌtorments عظامٌimmense شدائدٌharsh trials

And in it are immense torments, harsh trials;
And there are splitting pains, tremendous difficulties
The back is almost broken by their force.
That almost break the back with their intensity
إلىuntil أنthat يرَىsees الراجىthe hopeful one بلوغَattainment of مرادِهhis desire
مِنbecause of الصبرpatience فيin أيامهhis days ينفَدُruns out العُمْرُthe lifetime
By the time the hopeful one sees his wish fulfilled,
Until the hopeful one sees his wishes fulfilled
His life is used up by patience throughout his days.
Through patience in his days, his life expires
فإنso if كانthere is فيin الدنياthis world خُلودٌimmortality بخٍsplendid!
وإلاand if not فَلِمْthen why? والجسمُwhile the body ينحلُهُwastes it away الصبرُpatience
So if there is immortality in this world—splendid, splendid!
If there is eternity in this world - far from it!
And if not, why be patient, when patience wastes the body away?
Otherwise why would patience ruin the body?
فماso ... not الصبرُpatience إلاexcept عنfrom حرامٍwhat is forbidden محرمٍprohibited
وفيand in طاعةِobedience to الرحمنthe Most Merciful ربّيmy Lord هُوit الأجْرُthe reward
So patience is only in abstaining from what is strictly forbidden,
Patience is nothing but forbidden sin
And in obedience to the Most Merciful, my Lord, lies the reward.
And obeying my Lord al-Rahman is the reward
