Peace, salutations, and a thousand joys,

With these I single out the pure-hearted, rightly guided Salim,

Scion of Khamis, son of the pure-hearted Mubarak,

For he has become a close, peaceable friend to us.

My greetings be upon you at every moment and hour,

Unceasingly—the loss of a companion is grief enough for doves.

We lent you, O loving friend, seven poems,

And you traveled for a long while, and have arrived safely.

So, out of your loftiest kindness, graciously give them back to us,

Swiftly, just as we bestow favors upon you.

May I be your ransom—release them, for this is our messenger,

Khamis, the loyal friend, who has come to you to confer.

So hand him the loaned verses being reclaimed,

And you will be blameless, spared reproaches.

And far be it from you—nay, far be it—that he return disappointed,

For you have become a boon companion who shares our company.

If you desire a favor from us, it will be fulfilled,

By leave of God, who presides over affairs.

We single you out for salutation, scion of Mubarak,

Peace and salutations, at closely spaced intervals.

And take it as a gift from a Muʿwali,

It delights you—indeed, it bestows gains upon you.

It consoles lovers’ hearts, as though it were

A beloved who has come to his family.

Its absence keeps slumbering eyelids awake,

As though, through reunion, it awakens one who stands.

Rhymes to which fresh pearls are servants,

Just as I have become a servant to the pure-hearted Ibn Sultan.

And send blessings, my God, at every moment and hour,

Upon Ahmad, the purest of humankind in noble character.
