Peace from me upon the saintly ruler,

possessor of generosity, graciousness, and beneficence.

And to the imam, our patron and chosen friend,

the pure, high-minded, most generous master.

The sea of eloquence, Salim ibn Muhammad,

that honored one, exalted through piety.

He is my master, pure, high-minded, and chosen,

of pure stock, possessed of lofty lineage.

Gentle in temperament, ascetic and scrupulously devout,

just in judgment, whether of the lowly or the exalted.

He outstrips the eloquent through the excellence of his speech,

even if they excel at racing and bestowing gifts.

He is my Eden and my love amid my distress,

the truest of my friends, the cure for my cough.

Whenever I asked Time for what I desired,

he set aside his own wishes and strove for me.

In the mornings I still recall those nights

whose joy we enjoyed—and in the evenings too.

And how often we were together in a haven,

    enjoying the delight of union.

But today has left our company scattered,

    dispersed, its limbs torn apart.

By evening, in the fire of parting from him to whom I gave

unmixed love, above all creation, I burn.

Am I blamed for loving him, when he is at peace with me,

peerless among mankind in his qualities?

Within me, the heat of longing blazes in my breast,

quenched only by the coolness of reunion.

And parting from the one I love, and severing ties—

so through that, his cord clings to my cords.

I grow strong when his name is mentioned in a gathering,

as though youth's infant had crawled to me.

Though I am seventy-five, those years already gone,

when he appears before me, I am in life's prime.

And I forget every loving friend among mankind,

and cease to pine for my family and my cubs.

When we reminisce and our conversation grows long,

you are unaware of what recedes and what approaches.

How noble he is, how excellent a scholar!

I have never met him without his setting my mind at ease.

Even were I afflicted by parting from two thousand companions,

and beheld him, I would not care.

    كانَ اقترابُ جنابهِ أبقى لِي

    I have exchanged the robes of life in his absence;

being near his presence kept me alive longer.

Alas! I have wasted my life in his absence.

My sword was youthful, and my hopes withdrew.

O friend, you who have never ceased

to have my enduring love, listen to my words.

Be like your friend, whose heart is not shaken

by my repeated talk and chatter among mankind.
