O our beloved, union with you is life to us.

And our masters, delay from you is death to us.

We are occupied with remembering you and wander lovesick in your love.

We have no occupation other than remembering you.

If the days generously grant me union with you,

then all time's bitterness turns sweet for us [wording irregular].

And if one day they withhold your nearness from us,

then all time's sweetness is molten metal to us.

How, then, can the heart find ease and rest,

when not for one hour of its life does it forget you?

And how can the heart find solace after parting from you,

when my heart is never free of remembering you?

You have withheld union from us, yet

stinginess and withholding adorn you in my eyes.

My reproacher never tires of blaming me, while my ears

are deaf to the entry of blame and reproach.

Those who understand excuse me in love,

while those seized by ignorance reproach me for it.

How long this separation, rejection, desertion, and hatred,

your turning away, distance, rancor, and vengeance?

I shall indeed bear long sorrow and choking grief,

all my life, if Juml persists in her desertion.

and a lowered gaze, its dark irises against clear whites adorned by kohl—

kohl-dark—and a slender waist complaining of the pain of separation

from her hips: when she rises, their weight burdens it.

And a smooth, soft cheek, unmarred by

whiteness: an ember's glow lies upon it, without polish.

what need have I, if I say they erred in their words?
