O king whose bounty is hoped for,

I never cease to hope for your copious bounty.

Indeed, I have come to you in hope and expectation,

traversing toward you uncharted lands and deserts.

Look upon me with your mind's eye, and turn

to me, for the enemy keeps turning thoughts over,

acting like a leopard, like a lion, and baring

his shin as he snatches up the news.

    وإذا رأنى في ارتفاعِ غارَا

    Then, when he sees me brought low, it pleases him;

and when he sees me rise, he grows jealous.

Do not marvel at the envious if they go to extremes

in their scheming, for the envious are jealous.

The immoderate envier chooses his own death

rather than see prosperity for the noblest,

or see the slanderers receive favor,

or a forbearing man win honor.

O possessor of praise and high rank, have compassion for one

whose public avowal does not contradict his secrets.

O you whose honor is exalted, and who has

a resolve that cleaves the sharp, severing sword.

That is indeed the Ya'rubi imam, Bil'arab—

I mean the lion, the valiant raider.

Scion of the noble youth Sultan Sayf, the unsheathed sword,

the vast, brimming sea with its powerful current.

Yours is a hand's generosity that puts the rains to shame,

and a face's radiance that shames the moons.

Your hand has surpassed the utmost bound in generosity,

until you have inundated their small and great alike.

And were you not content to give all your wealth,

that you bestowed wealth and lives as well?

I cannot duly thank you for what you have bestowed on me,

for your hand's generosity has exceeded all measure.

No man ends his day otherwise than bound

by your bounty: all the world's people are captives.

There is no fault in your bounty save that,

through its abundance, it enslaves the free.

And your fine, gracious welcome, full of honor,

makes people forget their families and their neighbor.

What is the sea beside your bounty? What is life-giving rain?

If you compare it, neither would reach a tenth.

For the sea casts forth bitter brine unwillingly,

and your bounty pours forth gold and pure gold.

a loving virgin who puts other virgins to shame.

She vaunted herself over her sisters with rare gems [uncertain reading],

and benefits, not an armlet and a bracelet.

She revives your fair renown anew,

as long as a pole in heaven pours forth abundantly.

And whenever the front-runners wish to catch her,

they catch nothing but pebbles and dust.

Whoever claims he can bring her

    a matching equal—then hurry, hurry!

Sultan, then poems like her can be found.

your adversary grows in grief and loss.

So savor her, O son of the noble: rhymes

    like jewels, surpassing all poetry.

There is no fault in her save that her company

kindles fire in the adversary's entrails.

I have polished her, looking to God through her on the morrow,

so that He may lift from me sin and burdens.

Indeed, whoever recites her meanings is like one

who recites the Book of God and the traditions.

And joy be yours at the Feast of Sacrifice; so slaughter

the enemies—do not prolong their lives.

And live on in everlasting life, immortal,

as long as the two luminaries' light dawns by day.
