My two friends, care and sorrow have pitched their tents
My beloved, grief and sorrow have pitched their tents
in my heart against my will; what counsel have you concerning them?
In my heart against my will, so what is your opinion of them?

They mean to leave me no solace
They want to leave me no solace
and leave me wasted in body and sickly.
And to leave my body lean and sickly

If you two will aid me, gird yourselves and advance;
If they overpower me, roll up your sleeves and step forward
if you two will not aid me, then hold back.
And if you cannot make me happy, then refrain

They have settled their plans and differed,
They have agreed on their matter and disagreed
and have mustered a vast army against us.
And they have assembled against us a mighty army

أم الحرب أحرَى خوف أن تَنَدَّمَا
Shall we face them in humiliation and abasement, compelled,
Shall we confront them with humiliation and belittlement by force
or is battle more fitting, lest you two regret it?
Or is war more appropriate, lest they may regret

فلسنا بذِي عزٍّ لنرميَ مَنْ رَمَى
Then my soul, urging cowardice, told me: Desist!
My cowardice told me to be calm
For we have no might to strike whoever strikes.
For we are not people of honor to retaliate against one who attacked

Nor have we strength in the face of adversity,
Nor over calamities are we people of strength
nor are we sons of kings, that we should advance.
Nor are we the sons of kings to step forward

Did you not see me in adversities a strong brother
a fierce defender, and in adversity a keen, cleaving sword?
Ardent and in calamities biting my lips in determination

And I do not complain to people about a misery
that has afflicted me, even if my body were shattered.
With which I was afflicted, even if my body was shattered

Say to the people of this world, and this world, that I
am steadfast, even if Radwa were to collapse upon me.
Am steadfast even if it was content to see me collapse

Time's war and peace are alike to me;
It is the same to me, the war of time and its peace
if patience is with me, I do not suffer.
When patience is with me I feel no pain

And I do not care if its twists serve me
cups of wine, or give me ʿaʾtam to drink [word unclear].
A cup of clear wine or murky water

Until patience cries out from me in pain

when they struck me, they added nothing to my forbearance.
So when they visited me, they did not increase me in determination

am content with what I have been given, whether restricted or increased.

They say: You do not weep for relatives' deaths;
Is crying forbidden for you?
has weeping now become forbidden to you?
So I said to them: No, but if it is beneficial

I would weep blood over the loss of our loved ones.

I resolved, and we mustered armies out of sorrow;
We defeated with them the army of worries with perseverance
with them we routed the army of cares through strenuous effort.

Abiding therein, given to drink sealed nectar
dwelling there, offered sealed nectar to drink.

But whoever deliberately disobeys Him openly and does not repent,

and dies persisting in sin, will burn in Hell's fire.

Find a single refuge to which he escapes and is safe

And every person is recompensed for what he forwarded
each person is requited for what he has sent ahead.

Who related on the margins of prose, strung poems
resembling strung pearls along the margins of the page.
