I pass the night with a heart wounded by weeping,

And an eye that pours out tears of longing.

And longing, turmoil, thought, and anguish,

And a fire of separation striking sparks within my heart.

My longing grows time after time,

Whenever lightning appears, coursing by night and flashing on.

And if a raincloud looms over al-Aridiyyah,

My heart nearly overflows with longing because of it.

I recalled a time with the beloved, and a place

Where incense, sweet basil, and musk waft their fragrance.

And the days when pleasure's bough was tender, and when I

Was young, frolicking in the field of youth.

And the days when the ankleted maiden devoted her love to us,

And we gave her union and affection, and she gave in return.

A maiden moving gracefully, swaying as though she were

A slender branch swaying on a curved dune of fine sand.

She has a sweet smile and a mouth with delicately spaced teeth,

And night-black tresses and a girdled waist,

And a radiant breast whose light adorned the jewels,

And a shining face, brighter than the full moon's radiance.

And her saliva tastes of the water of Yabrin,

Mingled with pure wine when morning comes to her.

Nor have I forgotten the days of reproach, when I

Kept my love's secret hidden, while she made it plain.

We poured out reproaches between us, and it was as though I

Hinted at my love for her, while she spoke openly.

And she hides her love for fear of slanderers; it is only

Our tears that reveal passion and longing.

And when she saw my head change color, she turned away,

For beauties turn away from a man with gray hair.

She departed, leaving my heart melting with bitterness,

And an eye dripping with flowing tears.

So I said to her, 'Fear God, our Lord.'

She replied, 'For gray hair, like poverty, is uglier.'

I went away, not knowing which path to take,

So here I am, swimming in a sea of bewilderment.

Thus I was given misery in place of bliss, and indeed I

Found hopes more restful than what I endure.

And when I saw Time unleash its vicissitudes,

I returned to the course that was better.

And I headed toward Isa, making for a lord,

And neither a desert nor a barren plain turned me away from him.

He is the noble, giving, generous Bal'arab,

The much-praised descendant of Sultan bin Saif.

I praised you, O sun of the age and its full moon,

With unalloyed praise—I praise no one but you.

You bestowed abundant gifts without boasting of your favors,

So you exceeded all measure, until I thought you were jesting.

Indeed, a Hatim-like favor has bound me,

So do not think I turn away from conversation with you.

And may I ever revel gratefully in your bounty,

And why should one who profits not give thanks?

And my praise of you, through all time, is my trade,

So take my profit, and may I ever profit.

For you are a sea of generosity, glory, and bounty,

And may you forever display your bounty and bring joy.

So no need has any recourse but to you,

And no request we make of you fails to succeed.

And no seeker of bounty returns without gratitude,

And no petitioner approaches you without prospering.

And there is no destitute man whose affairs you do not set right,

And no sufferer comes to you without faring better.

Your countenance is like the moons—nay, it is brighter,

And your forbearance is like mountains—nay, it is weightier.

And take an unveiled bride, a daughter of an hour,

And far-flinging distance has not diverted her from you.

She vies with the poems of the ancients in praising you,

Through all time—may she keep traveling and frolicking.

When weighed against poetry for meaning and precision,

All verse weighs light beside her, and she outweighs it.

And she grows ever fresher with time, whenever

Evening and morning pass over the world.

And when she is recited, every ear bows to her,

And Khufaf weighs light beside her singer, while she tips the scales.
