I am a sea of satire if you seek estrangement from me,

And seas of praise if you seek my friendship.

O critic of my verse, restrain your speech and desist,

Lest hardship strike you by my decree.

So beware, then beware, then beware of

The lion of al-Sharā and scatterer of foes.

O you who would split a rock with a glass bottle,

Desist—may I be rid of you—O father of the rabble!

Do you fault it, when it has been vouched for by

Our eloquent speakers—indeed, all the scholars?

No sighted person denies the radiant sun,

Except a little fellow with a blind eye.

Whoever faults it craves satire, because

His character is deficient, so he sought my satire.

And has the disparager of my verse not seen that I am

The cup of death, the companion of hardship?

You two, say a word to him, so he may open his eyelid:

Indeed, I am of great stature among poets.

I am like your age, as though my traits

Were molded from prosperity and adversity.

If my might struck the solid, firmly rooted mountains,

It would cast their summits down upon the dusty earth.
