He journeyed by night, while the breeze of the Hijaz caressed—
He traveled by night while the breeze of al-Hajizayn caressed
the boughs of al-Naqā, while rain streamed steadily from the clouds.
the boughs of al-Naqa, while the clouds poured rain.
ألاah! ماhow أحُيْلاهُsweet he is! أتىhe came بعدafter هجعةٍa spell of sleep

Ah, how sweet he was! He came after a spell of sleep,
Ah, how sweet he was! He came after a spell of sleep,
and, after his agitation, the trembling had subsided.
and tremors had stilled after their agitation.

حبيبٌa beloved بأسبابِin the ways of المودةِaffection عارفُwell versed
He came as night let down its curtains—
He came while night was lowering its curtains,
a beloved well acquainted with the bonds of affection.
a beloved well versed in the ways of affection.
فقامَthen he stood بلطفٍgently يقرعُknocking البابَthe door ماثِلاًstanding there
بصوتٍwith a voice رخيمٍmellow فوعُهits swell مترادِفُrecurring
Then he stood there, gently knocking at the door,
Then he stood there, gently knocking at the door,
in a mellow voice, its resonance following wave upon wave.
with a mellow voice, its swells following one another.
فقلتُso I said لهto him منwho ذاthis علىat البابِthe door واقفاًstanding
فقالthen he said حبيبٌa beloved بالوصالِwith union مساعِفُready to oblige
I said to him, “Who is this standing at the door?”
I said to him, “Who is this standing at the door?”
He answered, “A beloved, ready to grant reunion.”
He said, “A beloved, ready to grant union.”
فقلتُso I said لهto him فليدخلَنَّthen let him surely enter حبيُبناour beloved
فأهلاًso welcome! وسهلاًand a warm welcome! أَمَّنَتْكَhas made you safe المخلوِفُunclear; perhaps 'fears'
I told him, “Then surely let our beloved enter—
I said to him, “Then let our beloved come in!
a hearty welcome! The very perils have granted you safety.”
Welcome, most welcome! May fears spare you [text uncertain].”
فلماthen when التقيناwe met قالَhe said هَلْis there? منany عُلاَلَةٍa little refreshment
إذاif كنتyou are ذاpossessed of بشرٍcheerfulness ولانتand grew supple معاطفُsides; bearing
When we met, he said, “Is there any remaining draught,
When we met, he said, “Is there a little refreshment,
if you are in good cheer and your sympathies have softened?”
if you are cheerful and supple of bearing?”
فَعِشْso live on أنتَyou وابناكand your two sons الكريمانthe two noble ones فيin العلىeminence
وضدُّكمand your foe للخُسْرِto loss والذلand humiliation آلفُaccustomed
Then long life to you and your two noble sons in the heights,
So live on, you and your two noble sons, in eminence,
while your adversary grows accustomed to loss and humiliation.
while your foe keeps company with loss and humiliation.
ولىand for me فيin معالِىthe heights of مجدِكمyour glory وعلائِكمand your eminence
وفيand in عزكمyour might دونrather than الأنامall humankind مآلفُfamiliar havens
For me, in the lofty reaches of your glory and grandeur,
And for me, in the heights of your glory and eminence,
and in your honor above all humankind, are cherished abodes.
and in your might, rather than anyone else's, are familiar havens.
وإنيand I indeed علىin رغْمspite of الحسودِthe envious one وضدكمand your foe

And despite the envier and your adversary,
And I, despite the envious man and your foe,
I shall surely pluck with my own hand the fruits of your generosity.
surely pluck with my own hand the fruits of your bounty.
وإنيand I indeed لديكمbefore you طائعٌobedient متواضعٌhumble

In your presence, I am obedient and humble,
And before you I am obedient and humble,
heeding whatever you have said; I do not disobey.
attentive to what you have said [text uncertain]; I do not disobey.
