My joy is complete if I see you approaching,

Out of longing; and the world is joy and good fortune.

If these two are absent, life is wretched,

There, worry and fears keep it company at night.

A letter reached me from our cherished friend,

Esteemed among us, even should circumstances change.

A loving friend of long-standing affection, a sincere adviser,

    Steadfast through adversity, never altered.

Wise and sober-minded, he is above

People's 'it was said' and 'they said,' for all time.

He passes noon and evening distinguished by rare anecdotes,

When they encamp amid misdeeds and talk.

He keeps his soul unsullied by others' faults,

And raises it above what they have done and said.

So there is no good in wealth if wisdom is absent,

Nor in reason, if they turn away from your side.

    بنظمكَ فيه رقةٌ وجميلُ

    A letter reached me from you, bearing blessings and radiance;

Your verse within it holds tenderness and beauty.

But, my friend, it stirred what lay still,

As on the day the departing travelers' camels journeyed by night.

And when we read it, we rejoiced, and it gladdened us,

As reunion gladdens a heart that knows companionship.

And I have no cares if you should come to visit,

Certainly, even if enemies oppress and attack.

And what keeps me from retaliating against an enemy

Are traits and virtues drawn from your counsels.

And indeed I fear that distance may erase our pledge,

    As shadows dispelled intense sorrow.

And we find solace in meeting you and enjoy your nearness,

And bewilderment and error are lifted from us.
