What need have I to condemn the people of my time,

When through them my needs and hopes are fulfilled [reading uncertain]?

If I fault one of them and condemn him,

I am not free of fault or imperfection.

Both the hated and the beloved among them will surely fall under

My censure—those I love and those who love me.

Why, then, should I mention another's fault, delving

Into its telling, when I know my own condition well?

    أأذمُّ غيري والقذَى يَغْشَاني

    Indeed, I have faults and am not blameless;

Shall I condemn another while filth covers me?

If the faultfinder [reading uncertain] looked at his own failings,

He would find fault with no one in this life.

If you claim that they mentioned you, or

Feared you on account of evil, then you are the wrongdoer.

If you wish to be praised in your time, [turn away]

From every fault that disgraces a human being.

And remember your faults before another's, if indeed

You are a person of religion and faith.

Entrust God's servants—do not fault their character—

To the Most Merciful, and honor their rights.

Will you escape unscathed if you fault their natures,

Wounding them with a tongue's edge?

If you fault them, your faults will multiply among them,

And they will pelt you with hatred and enmity.

    تَسْلم من التوبيخِ والهجرانِ

    Live untainted by speaking of them and their faults;

You will be spared rebuke and estrangement.

And thank whoever has bestowed his bounty upon you,

For gratitude is a stairway to beneficence.

And know for certain that neglecting gratitude, in the eyes of

People of reason, leads to loss.

    إن الجحودَ لغايةُ الحرمانِ

    Do not deny favors from people of generosity;

Indeed, ingratitude is the utmost deprivation.

    فرضٌ عليك محبةُ الإخوانِ

    And praise whoever entrusted you with honoring his affection;

Loving your brothers is a duty upon you.

If you wish them not to speak of you in backbiting,

    Then mention their virtues everywhere.

And restrain your tongue; do not fault their character,

For the noble person guards neighbors' honor in their absence.

Take what the people of your age reveal, and be content

With what is public, not the hidden depths of secrets.

    If you search people's secrets

For the faults of the flawed, you will live without friends.

Then follow the path of the God-fearing, for through piety

Your Lord saves you from passion and humiliation.

I am indeed ashamed before the Most Merciful to

Expose failings while my own faults look on.

And whenever I consider condemning the people of my time,

I reflect on my own fault and imperfection.

For if I condemn them, I become their partner,

Truly, because all of us are alike.

All people—how could I condemn them?—

Show me kindness, and all are brothers.

May my tongue fall mute if I speak in their condemnation,

With Bilʿarab among them, Sultan's young son.

Time bestowed him upon us; thereafter

His two hands came to pour down bounty.

He is the offspring of Sultan, the well-pleasing imam,

A master of excellence, pure of mind.

He gives without reproach, without delay, and without

Sourness, with a radiant, handsome face.

O you whose two hands draw forth gifts among

These people, generously, at all times.

And you settled us in an abode of enduring honor,

And plucked us from the fire of time's calamities.

And established us in honor and joy,

And sheltered us from the harshness of the times.

No neighbor of his is wronged in his care, nor is he seen

Ever burdened with grief or sorrows.

    Indeed, praise reveals affection,

As written pages reveal themselves through their headings.

I am not covetous; yet if I desire anything,

My desire leads only to bounty pouring like rain,

And to a surging ocean of clashing waves,

That enriches God's servants with pure gold.

O you whose father weakens enemies in

Raids, while you yourself weaken rivals.

O you whose father subdues the brave in

Battles, while you scatter the horsemen.

O you whose [father, reading uncertain] is honored and exalted

In rank, and revered in standing.

O you, before whom time's misfortunes and its turns

Now accomplish nothing, like a captive in bonds.

I now walk in splendor amid your blessings, trailing

The hem of joy amid wealth and safety.

And you have shielded me from every grievous calamity,

Turning toward me your watchful eye [reading uncertain].

And you singled me out for affection and honor,

Until through them I ceased longing for my homelands.

Praise and thanks, O scion of our imam:

Through your hand's bounty my branches have leafed out [reading uncertain].
