A greeting like the scent of musk—indeed, more fragrant,

And more delightful than cool, clear water, and sweeter,

And sweeter than honey mingled with limpid water,

And sweeter than the beloved’s saliva, and more pleasant.

Its fragrance surpasses the scent of aromatic herbs,

And puts the scent of aloeswood to shame as it is turned.

It consoles the hearts of the lovesick with its charm,

And dispels sorrows whenever it finds voice.

And if its words are recited in gatherings,

A child, a middle-aged man, and a graybeard cry out in response.

So a page resembled Moses’ palm, and a maiden with budding breasts

Outshines the sun’s radiance before it sets.

It contains meaningful words, as though they were

Necklaces of rubies—indeed, it is more wondrous.

And fine praise, as long as rainclouds pour in torrents,

And one in torment yearns for Wadi al-Atiq,

And a remembrance of greetings that renews what has passed

Of affection and tender care—what is never effaced.

I reserve it for the virtuous, generous Muhammad,

A youth of glory, gallant, brave, and proven,

A man of virtue, kindness, good cheer, and contentment.

He is the favored one, beloved in every heart.

And it would have been fitting for us to visit your dwellings,

Hastening on our heads, not riding on camels.

And we long to walk barefoot to visit you,

But a wilderness and a vast desert plain stand between us and that.
