ألا فاذكرا العهد الذي كان بيننا

فإنى وإنْ طالَ الزمانُ لذاكرُه

Oh recall the covenant that was between us

Though time be long, still shall I call it to mind

ولا تنكرَا ودّاً قديماً وذمةً

فلا أنَا ناسيه ولا أنَا ناكرُه

Deny not the friendship of old and troth plighted

Neither I forget it nor disavow in my mind

وفعلكما الخيرَ الجميلَ مقدماً

على حالِه منِّي وإنى لشاكرُه

And the kind, fair deeds you did aforetime

Despite my estate, still am I mindful of them

فبعدكما مالِي صديقٌ مساعِدٌ

أُرَاوِحه في حاجتي وأُبَا كِرُه

After you twain no friend have I found

To help me in need and to solace my mind

ومالِي عَلى جمعِ العُلوم وَدرْسِها

خليلٌ أُوَاخيه تقىً وأُذاكِرُه

No comrade in learning and conning of lore

To teach me in friendship and join in my mind

فمنْ لي إذا ريبُ الزمان أمَضَّنى

وَمَنْ لي إذا جاشَتْ علىَّ عَساكرُه

Then what shall I do if the days bring me grief?

And what shall I do if horsemen press on my mind?

فأمسيتُ وحدي والحوادثُ جمةٌ

علىَّ سوى هَمٍّ وفكر أفاكرُه

So I spend my night lone, with troubles enow,

Naught else but sad thoughts in my mind
