My heart is my parchment, and tears are my ink.

And the script is my entrails, and the remedy my heart.

And longing is my intimate friend, and weeping my companion.

Since you went away, I have been denied my sleep.

O dwellers of Manj, my heart is with you,

Throughout the nights, ever amid my sleeplessness.

My body is with me, but my soul is in Manj, and I have

A heart tormented by love for my homeland.

I still ache deep within at parting from you,

O dwellers of Manj, and you whom I hold dear.

I left in your keeping my heart, my soul, and my entrails,

And my reason, then the livers’ last spark of life.

Our separation was never what you wished,

No indeed—nor, my masters, was it what I wished.

So upon you, from me, be enduring peace,

Lasting until the day of reunion and my return.
