ممشوقَةٌslender and tall غادَةٌa tender maiden غرَّاءُbright-faced عذراءُa virgin
ممشوقَةٌ غادَةٌ غرَّاءُ عذراءُ
Ah, has a dark-lipped maiden with cool saliva stirred your sorrow?
O one whose cool saliva has enchanted,
Slender, tender, bright-faced, a virgin.
A smooth, soft, tender, pure maiden,
وهْنانةٌlanguid بَضَّةٌsoft and plump رَقراقةٌdelicately shimmering فُنُقٌpampered
وهْنانةٌ بَضَّةٌ رَقراقةٌ فُنُقٌ
بَهنَانةٌsweet-scented كاعِبٌbudding-breasted بلْهاءُguileless غيداءُgracefully supple
بَهنَانةٌ كاعِبٌ بلْهاءُ غيداءُ
Languid, soft and plump, delicately shimmering, pampered.
Delicate, gentle, supple, graceful,
Sweet-scented, budding-breasted, guileless, gracefully supple.
Coy, shy, white, radiant,
خَمصانةٌflat-bellied وَهَضِيمُand slender الكَشْحthe waist راغدةٌliving in ease
خَمصانةٌ وَهَضِيمُ الكَشْح راغدةٌ
هَرْكُولَةٌfull-hipped غَضَّةٌtender قَنْواءُaquiline-nosed هيفَاءُslim-waisted
هَرْكُولَةٌ غَضَّةٌ قَنْواءُ هيفَاءُ
Flat-bellied and slender-waisted, living in ease.
Bashful, plump, sleek, slender,
Full-hipped, tender, aquiline-nosed, slim-waisted.
Willowy, tender, delicate, shapely,
غريرةٌguileless طَفْلةٌdelicate بيضاءfair-skinned عَبْهَرةٌfull-formed
غريرةٌ طَفْلةٌ بيضاء عَبْهَرةٌ
زَهْراءradiant عبقَرَةٌa marvel of beauty ظمياءthin and dusky-lipped حَسْناءُbeautiful
زَهْراء عبقَرَةٌ ظمياء حَسْناءُ
Guileless, delicate, fair, full-formed.
Flirtatious, white child, fragrant,
Radiant, a marvel of beauty, thin and dusky-lipped, lovely.
Radiant, sweetly scented, beautiful, lovely,
غريرةٌguileless ناهِدٌfull-breasted حَسناءُbeautiful بَهْكَنَةٌsoft and plump
غريرةٌ ناهِدٌ حَسناءُ بَهْكَنَةٌ
خريدةٌa shy maiden فاركٌaverse to her husband لفّاءُfull-thighed دَرْماءُsmooth-limbed
خريدةٌ فاركٌ لفّاءُ دَرْماءُ
Guileless, full-breasted, beautiful, soft and plump.
Flirtatious, sleepy, pretty, coquettish,
A shy maiden, averse to her husband, full-thighed, smooth-limbed.
Agile, nimble, playful, supple,
ممكورةٌround-legged عاجرٌample-bodied وَرْكاءُbroad-hipped رَهْرهةٌsoft-skinned
ممكورةٌ عاجرٌ وَرْكاءُ رَهْرهةٌ
مسحورةٌbewitched وحَصانand chaste الطبعnature زهراءُradiant
مسحورةٌ وحَصان الطبع زهراءُ
Round-legged, ample-bodied, broad-hipped, soft-skinned.
Curvaceous, bare, white, quivering,
Bewitched, chaste in nature, radiant.
Bewitching, pure in nature, radiant,
مومومَةٌunclear epithet ورشوفand sweet-mouthed برَّاقِsparkling مَبْسَمهاher smiling mouth
مومومَةٌ ورشوف برَّاقِ مَبْسَمها
معشوقةٌbeloved وأَنُوفُand prominent الأنْفِthe nose قَنْوَاءُaquiline-nosed
معشوقةٌ وأَنُوفُ الأنْفِ قَنْوَاءُ
[Unclear epithet], sweet-mouthed, with a sparkling smile.
Infatuated, with a smiling dimple,
Beloved, with a prominent, aquiline nose.
Beloved, with a supple nose, shapely,
بِكرٌa virgin عَرُوبٌaffectionate toward her husband عيوبfaultfinding ماno بهاin her قَذَرٌimpurity
بِكرٌ عَرُوبٌ عيوب ما بها قَذَرٌ
ربَحْلَةٌlarge-framed غَضَّةٌtender قَبَّاءُslim-waisted حوراءُdark-eyed
ربَحْلَةٌ غَضَّةٌ قَبَّاءُ حوراءُ
A virgin, affectionate, faultfinding, with no impurity in her.
Chaste, honorable, no baseness in her,
Large-framed, tender, slim-waisted, dark-eyed.
Speedy, tender, passionate, nymph-like,
رَجراجةٌsoftly swaying ورداحٌand ample-bodied غيرnot حنكلةٍshort and ugly
رَجراجةٌ ورداحٌ غير حنكلةٍ
مُعَلّكٌdressed with gum فرعُهاher hair عذراءُa virgin بَلْهاءُguileless
مُعَلّكٌ فرعُها عذراءُ بَلْهاءُ
Softly swaying and ample-bodied, not short and ugly.
Tremulous, rosy, not uncouth,
Her hair is dressed with gum; a virgin, guileless.
Her branch flexes, tender, pure, radiant,
خَرعوبةٌtall and supple وأَناةٌand unhurried لاnot يُدَنِّسُهاsullies her
خَرعوبةٌ وأَناةٌ لا يُدَنِّسُها
لَوْمٌblame شَموعٌplayful بجمالُwith beauty الخلقof form أدماءُdusky-skinned
لَوْمٌ شَموعٌ بجمالُ الخلق أدماءُ
Tall and supple, unhurried; she is not sullied by
Shy, gentle, untouched by blame,
blame—playful, beautiful in form, dusky.
Candles in beauty of form, rosy cheeks,
خودٌa lovely young maiden رداحٌfull-hipped هدىٌّa bride طفلةtender فَتَنَتْshe bewitched
خودٌ رداحٌ هدىٌّ طفلة فَتَنَتْ
عقلىmy mind فلمso not يَحْلُis sweet ليto me عيشٌlife ولاand not ماءُwater
عقلى فلم يَحْلُ لي عيشٌ ولا ماءُ
A lovely maiden, full-hipped, a tender bride, who bewitched
Self-willed, rosy, a guiding light, she captivated me
my mind, so neither life nor water tastes sweet to me.
So I cannot live or drink water,
سكْرَىdrunken نوارٌchaste عزوفٌaloof عَزَّbecame difficult مطلبهاattaining her
سكْرَى نوارٌ عزوفٌ عَزَّ مطلبها
بخيلةٌwithholding باهِرٌdazzling جَمالهاher beauty لعساءُdark-lipped
بخيلةٌ باهِرٌ جَمالها لعساءُ
Drunken, chaste, aloof, hard to attain.
Intoxicated with light, aloof, her desire is miserly,
Withholding, dazzling in beauty, dark-lipped.
Stingy, shining, her beauty brings misery,
بِكْرٌa virgin بكيتٌI wept (uncertain reading) علىover تَعْرِيقهاher departure for Iraq (uncertain) سنةٌa year
بِكْرٌ بكيتٌ على تَعْرِيقها سنةٌ
هيshe الدَّواءُthe cure ولكنand yet هجرهاher abandonment داءُa disease
هي الدَّواءُ ولكن هجرها داءُ
A virgin—I wept a year over her departure for Iraq [reading uncertain].
Chaste, I cried over her aloofness for a year,
She is the cure, yet her abandonment is a disease.
She's the cure but to shun her is sickness,
لاno غروwonder إنif لمnot يُرis seen ليfor me بعدafter رؤيتهاseeing her
لا غرو إن لم يُر لي بعد رؤيتها
فيin القلبthe heart صادٌthe letter ṣād ولاand no باءٌthe letter bāʾ ولاand no راءُthe letter rāʾ
في القلب صادٌ ولا باءٌ ولا راءُ
No wonder if, after seeing her, I cannot find
No wonder, since after seeing her
ṣād, bāʾ, or rāʾ in my heart—the letters of patience.
My heart had neither letter saad nor baa nor raa,
خُوطيَّةُtwig-like القدِّthe figure إنif سلتshe draws off غلائلهاher fine garments
خُوطيَّةُ القدِّ إن سلت غلائلها
عنfrom جسمهاher body فَلَهاthen she has فيin الليلthe night لأْلاءُa glow
عن جسمها فَلَها في الليل لأْلاءُ
Twig-slender in figure, if she draws off her fine garments
Slender waist, if her tresses are unleashed
from her body, she glows in the night.
Over her body they are waves in the night,
معسولةُhoney-sweet الريقthe saliva مصقولٌpolished عوارضهاher side teeth
معسولةُ الريق مصقولٌ عوارضها
كأنماas though ريقهاher saliva شَهدٌhoneycomb وصهباءُand tawny wine
كأنما ريقها شَهدٌ وصهباءُ
Honey-sweet of saliva, her side teeth polished,
Honey-lipped, polished her cheeks
as though her saliva were honeycomb and tawny wine.
As if her saliva is honey and pure white,
تميلُshe sways تيهاًproudly كغُصْنٍlike a bough ناعمtender خَضِلٍdew-wet
تميلُ تيهاً كغُصْنٍ ناعم خَضِلٍ
فتانةُenchanting الطرفِthe eye سكرىdrunken اللحظthe glance نجلاءُlarge-eyed
فتانةُ الطرفِ سكرى اللحظ نجلاءُ
She sways in pride like a tender, dew-wet bough.
She sways drunkenly like a delicate branch
Enchanting of eye, drunken of glance, large-eyed.
Charming of glance, intoxicated of look, soft,
وشقوتيand my misery أنthat برَتshe wore away جسميmy body بجفوتهاwith her coldness
وشقوتي أن برَت جسمي بجفوتها
وهجرهاand her abandonment ماno لهاfor her فيin الدهرall time إرضاءُappeasement
وهجرها ما لها في الدهر إرضاءُ
And my misery is that she has wasted my body with her coldness
My misery is that her aloofness emaciated me
and her abandonment; through all time, she cannot be appeased.
And to shun her has no appeasement in this life,
ملولةٌfickle ماno لهاshe has عهدٌa pledge يدومlasts لهاfor her
ملولةٌ ما لها عهدٌ يدوم لها
يوماًa day وليسand there is not لهاfor her عهدٌa pledge وإيفاءُand fulfillment
يوماً وليس لها عهدٌ وإيفاءُ
Fickle, she has no pledge that lasts her
Capricious, no lasting covenant with her
a day; she has neither a pledge nor fidelity.
A day, no fidelity or keeping promises,
تكادُshe almost منfrom لينهاher softness تجرىflows إذاwhen قعدتshe sits
تكادُ من لينها تجرى إذا قعدت
كأنماas though جسمهاher body منfrom لِينهِits softness الماءُwater
كأنما جسمها من لِينهِ الماءُ
So soft, she almost flows when she sits,
So soft she seems to flow if she sits
as though her body, in its softness, were water.
As if her body is made of soft water,
بيضاءfair-skinned ريانةٌfull-fleshed منbecause of حسنbeauty صورتهاher form
بيضاء ريانةٌ من حسن صورتها
قدhas اعترَىseized بعدهاafter her departure قلبيmy heart سويداءُdark melancholy
قد اعترَى بعدها قلبي سويداءُ
Fair and full-fleshed; because of the beauty of her form,
White, delighted with the beauty of her form
after her departure, dark melancholy has seized my heart.
After her my heart is clad in black,
تكاملَbecame complete الحسنُbeauty فيin أوصافهاher qualities فَزَهَتْand so she shone
تكاملَ الحسنُ في أوصافها فَزَهَتْ
كأنهاas though she روضةٌa garden فيin الحُسنbeauty غَنَّاءُluxuriant
كأنها روضةٌ في الحُسن غَنَّاءُ
Beauty was perfected in her qualities, and she shone,
Perfection of beauty resides in her qualities
as though she were a luxuriant garden in beauty.
She blossomed like a garden full of melody,
أضراسُهاher molars لؤلؤٌpearls والدُّرُّand pearls منطقهاher speech
أضراسُها لؤلؤٌ والدُّرُّ منطقها
ووجههاand her face قمرٌa moon والقدُّand the figure سمراءُa tawny spear
ووجهها قمرٌ والقدُّ سمراءُ
Her molars are pearls, and pearls are her speech;
Her teeth are pearls and her necklace pearls
her face a moon, and her figure a tawny spear.
Her face a moon and her waist slender,
تاهَتْshe grew proud علىabove التيهpride منfrom حسنbeauty يتيهُglories بهاin her
تاهَتْ على التيه من حسن يتيهُ بها
ماnot لاقbefitted إلاexcept بهاher مدحٌpraise وإطراءُand lavish acclaim
ما لاق إلا بها مدحٌ وإطراءُ
She outdid pride itself, through beauty that glories in her;
She got lost in infatuation from the beauty that intoxicates her
praise and lavish acclaim befit her alone.
None but her is praised and flattered,
صدَّتshe turned away وليand I have كبدٌa liver حَرَّىburning تذوبmelts حَوىًyearning (uncertain reading)
صدَّت ولي كبدٌ حَرَّى تذوب حَوىً
ودمْعَةٌand a tear كرذاذlike drizzle المُزْنrain clouds حمراءُred
ودمْعَةٌ كرذاذ المُزْن حمراءُ
She turned away; I have a burning liver, melting with yearning,
She rejected me and so my liver dissolved with passion
and a red tear like drizzle from rain clouds.
And tears flowed like rain showers,
عَلَّperhaps الهُمامَthe valiant hero أباAbu الهيجاءِal-Hayja ينجدُنيaids me
عَلَّ الهُمامَ أبا الهيجاءِ ينجدُني
إذاwhen اعترانيbefalls me منfrom الأيامthe days لأوراءُhardship (unclear form)
إذا اعتراني من الأيام لأوراءُ
Perhaps the valiant Abu al-Hayja will come to my aid
May the protector of the desolate, Abu Al-Hayja' aid me
when hardship from the days befalls me.
When the days oppress me with their calamities,
أيقنتُI knew for certain أنthat ابنthe son of سلطانَSultan الإمامthe Imam لناfor us
أيقنتُ أن ابن سلطانَ الإمام لنا
بحرٌa sea طمَاoverflowed ولأهلand for the people of الأرضthe earth أَنواءُrain showers
بحرٌ طمَا ولأهل الأرض أَنواءُ
I know for certain that Sultan's son, the Imam, is for us
I'm certain the son of the Sultan, the Imam, is for us
a sea in flood, and rain showers for the people of earth.
A copious sea, and for the people alternations,
ياO منyou who إذاwhen ماemphatic particle التقىmet الجمعانthe two hosts ليثُa lion شَرىًShara
يا من إذا ما التقى الجمعان ليثُ شَرىً
ومنand who تمثَّلَembodied للأخلاقin moral character ماwhatever شاءواthey wished
ومن تمثَّلَ للأخلاق ما شاءوا
O you who, when the two hosts meet, are a lion of Shara,
O you who, when the two armies meet, are a voracious lion
and who embody in character whatever they wished for,
And you present to morals whatever you wish,
ومَنْand who تهلَّلَbeamed للعافينَfor seekers of bounty منظرُهُhis appearance
ومَنْ تهلَّلَ للعافينَ منظرُهُ
ومَنْand who نداهُhis bounty حيّاًrain والكفُّand the palm دَأْماءُa sea
ومَنْ نداهُ حيّاً والكفُّ دَأْماءُ
and whose face beams upon those seeking bounty,
O you who smiles gently at the weak
and whose bounty is rain, whose palm a sea,
While your palm is bloody,
ومَنand who يحُورُturns against علىupon الأموالwealth وهْوand he is أخوa companion of
ومَن يحُورُ على الأموال وهْو أخو
عَذلٍreproach كأنُas though صميمthe essence of المالِwealth أعداءُenemies
عَذلٍ كأنُ صميم المالِ أعداءُ
and who turn against wealth, despite incurring
O you who is stingy with wealth yet is brother
reproach, as though wealth itself were enemies;
To reproach, as if the essence of wealth is enemies,
ومَنand who إذاwhen اشتدتِclashed الآراءُopinions خُلّصُهاtheir soundest
ومَن إذا اشتدتِ الآراءُ خُلّصُها
رأْىٌa judgment لهof his كَشَبَاlike the edges of الهندىِّthe Indian blade إمضاءُdecisiveness
رأْىٌ له كَشَبَا الهندىِّ إمضاءُ
and who, when opinions clash, have the soundest of them—
O you who when views conflict, resolves them
a judgment as decisive as an Indian blade's edges;
With an opinion like Indian steel in decisiveness,
ومَنand who إذاwhen عَصَفَتْstormed أيديthe hands of الزَّمانTime بناagainst us
ومَن إذا عَصَفَتْ أيدي الزَّمان بنا
بجورهwith its injustice فلهthen he has جودٌgenerosity وإعطاءُand giving
بجوره فله جودٌ وإعطاءُ
and who, when the hands of Time storm against us
And when the hands of time treat us unjustly
with its injustice, have generosity and gifts to give;
You have generosity and giving,
ومَنْand who إذاwhen اشتدَّتْgrew fierce الهيجاءُbattle فيamid رَهَجdust
ومَنْ إذا اشتدَّتْ الهيجاءُ في رَهَج
تجرىruns بهwith him فيthrough بحارseas الموتِof death جرداءُa sleek mare
تجرى به في بحار الموتِ جرداءُ
and who, when battle grows fierce amid the dust,
And when wars rage fiercely in turmoil
are borne racing by a sleek mare through seas of death.
You surge in the seas of death undraped,
موتٌa death ترىyou see الموتَDeath ينْبُوrecoil منfrom مخافتهfear of him
موتٌ ترى الموتَ ينْبُو من مخافته
مَلْكٌa king لهhe has هِمَّةٌresolve فيin الملكِkingship قَعساءُunbending
مَلْكٌ له هِمَّةٌ في الملكِ قَعساءُ
A death before whose terror you see Death recoil;
A death that death itself flees in fear of you
a king with unbending resolve in kingship.
A king whom ambition in kingship wearies,
تَراهُyou see him جَذْلانَjoyful فيamong الشُّجعانthe brave قَسْوَرَةٌa lion
تَراهُ جَذْلانَ في الشُّجعان قَسْوَرَةٌ
ووجْهُهُand his face فيamid لأَلاءٌradiance وأضواءُand lights
ووجْهُهُ في لأَلاءٌ وأضواءُ
You see him joyful among the brave, a lion,
You see him formidable among the valiant, a stallion
his face bathed in radiance and light.
His face illuminated and radiant,
يُصَرِّفُhe directs الأمرaffairs ماas شاءَتْdesired إرادتهhis will
يُصَرِّفُ الأمر ما شاءَتْ إرادته
ومُقْلَةُand the eye of الدَّهرTime عنto حاليْهhis two states عمياءُblind
ومُقْلَةُ الدَّهر عن حاليْه عمياءُ
He directs affairs as his will dictates,
He maneuvers the affairs however he wills
and Time's eye is blind to his two states.
While the orbit of time is blind to its states,
شهمُstout الجَنانِof heart شجاعٌbrave لاnot يُؤْثَّرُan effect is left فيupon
شهمُ الجَنانِ شجاعٌ لا يُؤْثَّرُ في
سيماthe aspect of مُحيَّاهُhis face سَرَّاءٌease وضَرَّاءُand hardship
سيما مُحيَّاهُ سَرَّاءٌ وضَرَّاءُ
Stout-hearted, brave; no mark is left upon
Brave lion of the gardens, peerless in
the aspect of his face by ease or hardship.
Signs, his life in ease and hardship the same,
أصلٌa stock ترعرعَgrew منfrom جُرثومةٍa root شمختْtowered
أصلٌ ترعرعَ من جُرثومةٍ شمختْ
فخراproudly علىabove هامَةِthe crown of الجَوْزاءِal-Jawza علْياءُlofty
فخرا على هامَةِ الجَوْزاءِ علْياءُ
A noble stock grown from a root that towered
A lineage nurtured from a stock that towered
lofty in pride above al-Jawza's crown.
Proudly over the summit of glorious heights,
ياO مَنْyou who غداhas come to be كاسمِهِas his name يُدْعَىhe is called فإنfor indeed لهhe has
يا مَنْ غدا كاسمِهِ يُدْعَى فإن له
بِلاwithout امْتِرَاءِdoubt جميعَall الخلقcreation أبناءُsons
بِلا امْتِرَاءِ جميعَ الخلق أبناءُ
O you now called as your name implies; yours are,
O you who is called like your name, for you
without doubt, all creation as sons.
Without contention all people are sons!
